I transferred oncologists & yesterday I met ‘my’ new oncologist Vered Stearns. Dr. Stearns' sparkling smile is as bright as the Milky Way. I told her since I'm Stage 4 & can't be cured, "My goal is to have fun." [Tears aren’t an option.] She replied [It wasn't even a question]: "We can deliver that!" More than celebrating herself, she toasted the patient by using the editorial "we" [Not 'me, myself, I' can deliver]. I saluted her. She involves the entire onc-dept staff to gang up to make a patient's life pain-free~~even comfortable & enjoyable. How refreshing is zat? When that is your treatment future for a terminal disease, she hit the bull's eye. [Another Onc & the Oncology Operations Mgr endorsed her...they both won Bingo! in my soul.] Mental health is 50% of a physician's treatment; it's not a supernatural quality but is a rare potion Dr. Stearns stores in her heart. Macbeth [2nd witch]: "When the hurly-burly’s done, when the battle’s won"...you can count on her to… ensure patients will die with dignity. She juggles her turbo-charged lab [biomarkers] & clinic roles with aplomb. Even if you're not metastatic but need an onc, try her customized bedside manner. z. alexi
