Dr. Vito Louis Pugliano, MD

I have recently had my left hip replaced by Dr. Pugliano, using an anterior approach. Five years ago, I had my right hip replaced by another, highly regarded surgeon using a lateral approach. Let me first comment on my experience with Dr. Pugliano: outstanding! Very thorough, incredible patience, and very skilled. Various factors - including COVID - delayed surgery for me two years, but Dr. Pugliano was very patient in meeting over that period. I was particularly impressed that he updated my x-rays each time we met, not making any assumptions about what might’ve changed. Before meeting with him, I reviewed his education, training and experience. It is clear he is highly focused on providing the best possible joint replacement surgery available anywhere in the world today. He has in-depth knowledge of the prostheses and techniques available. We discussed at some length the virtues of the titanium stem design he uses - and not many docs can discuss the material properties of the… cross-linked, highly irradiated polyethylene used in the acetabulum cup. This is where the rubber meets the road in an artificial hip: an alumina ball running in a polyethylene cup and supported by a titanium stem is today’s best technology. The incision was less than 3.0 inches in length, healed beautifully, with elegant suturing. His advice on anesthesia was right on. And I am very grateful for his support during my two months of recovery: it was painful but manageable, thanks to his help. Next a comment on technique: Dr. Pugliano used an anterior approach with me and I am able to compare it with the previous lateral approach. From my experience, each has its own benefits. I regained my flexibility sooner using the anterior approach. I believe the lateral approach was less painful but recovery was longer. My experience has been that within a few months, both lead to excellent outcomes. I have trained 30 years in martial arts and am pleased that my range of motion is nearly restored. Presumably you, too, are contemplating a new hip. Choosing a highly experienced, well regarded surgeon is crucial - and I have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Pugliano. Good luck - the benefits to a new hip amply repay the discomfort of surgery!

Technically highly qualified. Lacked compassion re pain - bone on bone, post hip replacement, herniated discs, & more. Others may like him, but my experience was bad. Left alone, in severe pain.

My experience with Dr. Pugliano was above and beyond superb! I had a total hip replacement a year ago Dec 5th. Dr. Pugliano took time to hear my concerns, addressed every question I had. I did my homework and he had the correct answers. I never felt rushed. I was in horrendous pain-bone on bone. A few hours after the surgery I felt like myself again. I was able to bear full weight on the leg and did a few laps with a walker around the hospital floor. Dr. Pugliano checked in on me the 2 days I was there. Any questions I had post-op were quickly answered. I was able to ditch the cane nearly 3 weeks after surgery. Approximately 3 months later I resumed my low-impact aerobics workouts. Dr. Pugliano was impressed with my swift recovery and has been available every step of the way. When the time comes for the right hip to be replaced, he is the surgeon I’m going to. Bonus: I was please to find Dr. Pugliano graduated from Tufts Med. I attended Tufts U, good measure of comfort there.

I recently had dreaded knee surgery after waiting for years hoping for a miracle cure. I could not walk without a cane due to the arthritis in my knee. Dr. Pugliano met with me and my surgery was scheduled in a timely manner. The surgery went well at NEBH and I have to say I felt so well taken care before I went in which eased much of my anxiety. The Dr. and his staff could not have been more attentive and thorough in regards to my care. Just about all of my concerns and questions were answered before I could even ask. The pain management was excellent and each and every phone call was promptly returned. In a matter of three weeks after following his instructions to the best of my ability I have been released to do normal living and continue my PT to gain more stability. Note: I would like to add that his staff is friendly, very efficient, and dedicated to the patients. It could not have gone any better.
