Dr. William George Cioffi, MD

William Cioffi, MD, is the surgeon-in-chief at Rhode Island Hospital and is an expert in burns and smoke inhalation injuries. Cioffi served for seven years as chief of trauma surgery at Rhode Island Hospital before assuming his present role in 2001. He came to Rhode Island Hospital in 1994, after serving for 11 years as a surgeon in the United States Army. He was chief of the burn study branch at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (ISR) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Recognized worldwide for its burn research program, the ISR is the only dedicated burn and extremity trauma research facility in the military. In February 2003, Cioffi led the efforts to care for 63 burn victims brought to Rhode Island Hospital from The Station nightclub fire - the worst fire in Rhode Island's history. Cioffi graduated summa cum laude from the University of Vermont, and subsequently from the University of Vermont Medical School.
