Dr. Elexander Neel Atkinson

I am a native Charlottean and was raised in Mint Hill. Growing up I had many family members with chronic illnesses, and my experience of their diseases inspired me to go into medicine. When I discovered osteopathic medicine it aligned perfectly with my values and personal philosophy. \n I'm board-certified in family medicine, osteopathic family medicine, and osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine and manipulation (ONMM). \n My family medicine background allows me to treat a wide range of conditions, which I enjoy, and coordinate complex care for my patients. I enjoy the breadth of family medicine and the diverse patient population I get to serve. Specifically I enjoy evaluating and treating chronic disease, headaches, mental health and back pain. Ultimately my goal as a primary care provider is to help patients stay healthy and happy throughout the different chapters of their life. \n My specialty training in ONMM allows me to thoroughly evaluate patients' musculoskeletal systems …for injuries, causes of pain, loss of function and disease. I use a wide range of tools to assist in this to include detailed physical exams, hands on osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), home exercise programs, injections, medications and imaging. I am also trained to utilize in-office ultrasound for diagnostics and image-guided procedures, such as joint injections. \n Osteopathic manipulation treatment is a set of hands-on techniques designed to correct underlying dysfunctions within the body to improve function and reduce pain - is a routine part of my practice. \n I do offer OMT for special populations to include pregnant patients, infants and children, and people with disabilities. For pregnant patients I can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. For infants I assist with lactation, reflux, colic, torticollis, plagiocephaly, tongue ties and other concerns. Some patients with disabilities benefit from OMT to help with spastic muscles, headaches, mobility difficulties and many other concerns.
