1-Star Provider Review – Ada Grace Obah-Okpoko, NP (Psychiatry) I am leaving this review based on my direct experience with Ada Grace Obah-Okpoko, NP, during a psychiatric intake appointment. From the beginning, the interaction felt uncomfortable and discouraging. When I walked into the appointment, I had my phone out because I had notes prepared about symptoms and concerns I wanted to discuss. She asked me three separate times what was “wrong” with my phone. Each time I explained that nothing was wrong and that I simply had notes. She appeared visibly annoyed by this, which immediately set a negative tone. Ironically, her own phone rang during the appointment, and while she apologized, I repeatedly noticed her fidgeting with and checking her phone afterward. Given how much attention she placed on my phone usage, this felt unprofessional and inconsistent. Throughout the visit, her demeanor felt condescending and dismissive. Rather than conducting a thorough psychiatric evaluation,… she focused on isolated details and did not attempt to assess my symptoms holistically or within a broader diagnostic framework. When I asked how certain conditions could be ruled out without being properly assessed, she stated that she “did not feel comfortable” diagnosing me and would need to rule me out, specifically mentioning my age as a factor for why she was uncomfortable making that type of diagnosis. This was extremely concerning, as age alone should not prevent appropriate evaluation, especially in a psychiatric setting. She then stated she would need to refer me out to a psychologist, despite the fact that I was already actively seeking therapy and waiting for a therapist to call me back. I clearly explained that therapy is part of my plan, but that I was also there for evaluation, diagnosis, and guidance. What I found especially discouraging was that she repeatedly stated I “needed therapy, not medication,” before a full assessment was completed. For clarity, I was not seeking benzodiazepines, stimulants, or any specific medication. I was seeking professional evaluation and help. At the same time, she inconsistently mentioned antidepressants without adequately explaining how that conclusion was reached. She also expressed concern about “getting her license in trouble,” which further undermined my confidence in her clinical judgment and ability to provide appropriate psychiatric care. Additionally, there was a language barrier that made communication difficult. When I asked her to repeat or clarify questions so I could better understand, she appeared irritated, which made the interaction feel even more uncomfortable and unprofessional. Toward the end of the visit, she discussed the possibility of me switching my primary care doctor so their practice could see my medications and potentially prescribe for me. This felt contradictory and inappropriate, especially since she had already made it clear she did not want to prescribe anything. For someone actively seeking mental health help, this experience was discouraging, invalidating, and shutting down. Patients should not feel dismissed or ruled out based on age without proper assessment. If her approach is to avoid diagnosing and discourage medication entirely, she may be better suited for a therapy-only role rather than psychiatric care. I strongly caution others seeking comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to confirm exactly who they will be seeing and what level of care they can realistically expect
