Excellent doctor, excellent bedside manner,, not quick to use the knife. Highly recommend.

I was suffering from severe Sciatic nerve pain down the entire length of my left leg and across my left foot. I was not able to participate in any strenuous activity. When food shopping I used the cart as a lever to relief some of the sciatic pain. I had been to orthopedic doctors whom I respected and received shots in my back to relief pain. The relief was temporary and the pain returned within days. Dr. Abla was recommended by a friend (nurse) who had back surgery with Dr. Abla. During my first office vist I was very impressed with his physician assistant and the process of determining my pain level and goals. Dr. Abla was a bit amusing in his "no nonsense" interaction with the PA. He took time to illustrate the source of my pain and recommended back surgery. I had the surgery in the morning and walked to lunch (Hospital cafeteria) with my wife and daughter by noon. The only pain was from the incision, which terminated upon healing. I exercise every day. I play aggressive… racquetball five days per week and also lift weights for tone. I am able to work around the house (painting rooms, cutting grass, etc). Dr. Abla has given me back (no pun intended) my active life. My surgery was five years ago. I am now 70 years old. There is no pain or restriction of movement. The guy was fantastic!! Five stars several times.

I was doctoring with other neurologist and surgeons thank God I never took their pills or I would be a drug addict today. Finally in 1994 the one doctor told me there was nothing the wrong with my back it was all in my head but handed me 2 prescriptions for pain. I went out of there and never went back. In 2002 my PCP sent me to Dr. Abla. he was very kind and sympathetic. He was also very thorough. He ordered a bunch of test. I went back two weeks later and he showed me on my films what the problem was. I had two options surgery or be in a wheel chair in two years. 16 years later I am not in a wheel chair and I owe it all to the best in the country. I have recommended him to many people and will continue to recommend him.

Dr. Abla is one of the most arrogant doctors I have ever been exposed to in my whole life. I suffer from fibromyalgia and am overweight due to drugs that make you gain weight (80 lbs on 10 years) and not being able to do much physically due to chronic knee (total knee replacement by another greedy doctor...it didn't go well and I haven't been mobile for over 3 years, but that's another doctor horror story) and back problems. After waiting in his office for 2 and one half hours( I know everyone said I should have left after 1 hour) I was told don't come back until I lose at least 50 lbs. Then I was lectured about my diet. This doctor never even sat down. He doesn't know anything about me but he treated my like I was a big fat pig. NO SUGAR, NO BREAD, LEAN MEAT AND VEGETABLES.. Guess what Doc, I don't eat any of those things. But he doesn't know that because he never asked me anything, he just assumed I sit around and eat bon bons all day. He then proceeded to tell me to get the lap… band surgery, which by the way people with Fibromyalgia are not candidates for. He spent a total of 4 minutes with me and never asked me if I had questions, just lose weight or don't come back. I used to be quite athletic and always walked everywhere, now I can't even grocery shop. No answers for me though. Oh and by the way his office hours start at 1 pm and when I arrived at 2:15 there were 14 people in the office. Talk about overbooking and they charge $210.00 for that 4 minute appointment. What a waste of my time. Thank God my PPO has some compassion for my blight and is trying to find answers for me. I will NEVER go back to Dr. Abla again. My daughter who works for personal injury attorneys said" Surgeons have no bedside matter, they prefer their patients unconscious!" I guess I will continue this journey with massage therapy and meditation. I would give him no stars if this site allowed me to.

This guy is a great surgeon. I went to him barely able to walk, with swollen legs and a great deal of pain. i am five months into recovery and can walk and move about my farm and garden. The pain is localized and its greatly reduced. Dr Abla took time with me..explained procedures, was professional and caring. He is busy but has pride in his work. I believed he wants me to get better and works for my best interests. I would go to him again...

I knew Dr. Abla as a colleague; he is a gentleman with whom to work, his hands are good, his surgical times reasonable, and his blood losses minimal. When I went from being a neuroanesthesiologist to being a neurosurgical patient with cervical stenosis resulting in quadriparesis, he was my surgeon. I have needed to visit him periodically to make certain that exacerbations of my myelopathy are not the result of disease requiring additional surgery; this man is not "knife happy", and will not recommend surgery if it is not appropriate. He also performed a four-level cervical fusion on my husband when he developed myelpathic symptoms from cervical stenosis several years ago. Long story short, Don had almost complete resolution of his symptoms (some residual numbness in the right middle finger that had been present for years), and I am walking again. If you have a complicated spine problem and need a good surgeon rather than a hand-holder, Dr. Abla will take good care of you.

After 6 months of severe pain and many doctors acting as if I was faking the pain for narcotics, I finally was able to get a doctor to take a real look at me. I was with him 10 minutes, and he immediatly admited me for an MRI. After it was determined surgery was needed and I had my repair 2 days later. It was my first surgery. It was a spinal surgery so I was very scared. He was gentle kind and very very caring. He explained everything to me in detail, and had great bedside manner. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone!

I will 5 stars to Dr ABLA as he had to do neck surgery on me and made me feel comfortable and very at ease. He explained everything in detail, he also kept my wife posted on my progress in surgery and was there to speak with me after surgery and made a visit each day for 3 days during my stay, my neck surgery went well, he also told me of some possible future problems that may occurr, but we will just pray and keep a postive attitude, he knew of my concern going into surgery and immediately ordered something to calm me down. His manners and his patience with me was the best I have ever encountered.

When I experienced problems after surgery, this doctor believed that he was most perfect and infallible.He was also not very personable prior to surgery and was more callous afterwards.I'd NEVER recommend him to anyone.He represents All that a physician should not be!
