Dr. Ali Samii, MD

I was dumbstruck at how disrespectful, dismissive he was. He spoke mostly to his fellowship student, rarely directly to me. I see that noted in other reviews here. He was quick to dispute a diagnosis from John Hopkins without taking the time to review --or ask me about -- more than 4 years of medical records documenting symptoms, improvements from treatments. He treated me like a child or an idiot --not bothering to ask me directly about my experience with a rare disease or to give credit to some of most expert drs in the U.S. where I was previously treated. Worse - he did not share his perceptions with me - just other doctors. Would he have been so dismissive with a man? I just ran into another women who had a remarkably similar experience with him. I should have filed a formal complaint at the time. This is how bias against women continues to thrive in the medical profession. On a positive note, the doctoral fellow was very polite, compassionate, professional.

My son, who is disabled and has severe tremor, was referred to Dr. Samii. We saw him twice and both times, he did not recommend anything. Dr. Atkinson first met with us and asked some medical history of my son (again and again). Then Dr. Samii came in, checked on my son and then lectured Dr. Atkinson what he thinks. Then he took off without even telling me what he thinks, what needs to be done (if any) to abate my son's tremor, although he talked about surgery mostly to Dr. Atkinson. If Dr. Samii is truly a movement disorder specialist, he could have explained to me his diagnosis. I feel like an outsider hearing him talk to a student (Dr. Atkinson) while ignoring me. I am extremely disappointed. In other words, we saw him for NOTHING! A huge waste of time and $$$.

I See that people are giving him 1 star because of indifferent opinion instead of his skills. He is top notch Doctor and that is why UW hired him.

For his area of specialty, he seems top-notch. He's confident, knowledgeable, and can explain things in a matter-of-fact way -- which is how we prefer it.

Its just embarrassing how ignorant the statements are that come our of Dr. Ali Samiis mouth at the UW movement disorders clinic. He actually tells his patients that the most basic of all neurological genetic tests (that have been available for over a decade now) are not available in the US, but as far as he is aware these tests are only commercially available in Germany. Seriously, this from a University of Washington Associate Professor of Neurology. Dr. Ali Samii is another good example of why tenure just hurts everyone, from students, co-workers to the whole general public at large. Before making an appointment with a doctor, patients should really ask the year they graduated from medical school. Like for Dr. Smaii this date was in the 1980s and ask yourself whether you would like to receive treatment with tools available in the current century or not, before actually moving forward with making the appointment. Ignorance breeds ignorance or is it ignorance is blisseither way… both apply to Dr. Ali Samii at UWs movement disorder clinic.
