Dr. Ami Janardan Shah, MD

I really disliked her attitude and lack of caring. She needs to work on both her thoroughness and lack of showing concern for patients.

First of all, this awful woman has not worked at Mount Sinai for many years (nor is she fondly remembered there). I saw her at Bronx Lebanon, which at the time was the only major GYN clinic that accepted my small group insurance. I was referred to Shah after being diagnosed with a fibroid with very severe symptoms since she was then their director of the fibroid center and (supposedly) the head of robotics. She told me that I was lucky to get her since she was the best fibroid surgeon in the world and spent an hour bragging about her skills. On my next visit, when she opened my MRI films, she acted like a little kid handed a plate with broccoli - "ewww, I don't like it". She then told me that she didn't want to do a myomectomy (removal of the fibroid) because it would be too much work for her and it wasn't worth it since I was too old for having kids (I was 38) and I should just settle for a hysterectomy. She then tried to get me to do a bunch of unnecessary tests while I sat there… crying. When I finally changed jobs and insurance and was able to see a decent doctor (at another health system), I was told that my fibroid was perfectly easy to remove. When I told my surgeon what Ami Shah said, he cringed at hearing her name and said that she was an awful surgeon who struggled with the robot (he had worked with her). I had a very quick and uneventful surgery with a short uneventful recovery, and I'm still angry that I was forced to suffer my symptoms for so long due to my insurance only being accepted by few places which happen to hire the likes of Ami Shah. Now that clueless woman (I won't call her a doctor because she does not deserve her title) is working for another badly run organization (ACP), and I feel bad for any patient she might see.

I'm so frustrated with Dr. Shah and my visit. She did not take my concerns seriously at all and dismissed me entirely. She didn't ask me about my history and didn't listen to me when I tried to tell her about my issues. She would cut me off. Then she told me that I had no birth control options, which I now know is incorrect because I have consulted other physicians about my issues. I had a very unpleasant visit with Dr. Shah that left me feeling hopeless, frustrated and sad. Then, I never heard back about my test results, and was told off when I would follow up with the office. One of the nurses finally called me back 20 days after my horrible appointment to tell me that they lost the results and told me I would have to come back in again. Honestly, I would rather stay sick than to go back to Dr. Shah, as she caused me so much harm. I urge anyone seeking an OB/GYN to not make an appointment with Dr. Shah.

Dr Shah seems very nice but, she didn't take a thorough background on me and, subsequently, ran tests that I DID NOT NEED. An obgyn is supposed to ask about sexual history/practices, what form of birth control, etc. She did not do this and asked me if, in addition to a routine pap, if I wanted tests for something that 'sounded' like it would be helpful but was, in fact, for STDs. She also suggested a biopsy for something where a biopsy would be a last resort. Once I heard the word biopsy, I went blank and was not 'present in the room' which is why I didn't ask the right questions. (I am a very thorough question asker if I am not terrified, which I was re: the biopsy.) She also wanted to schedule a follow up appointment just to give me test results. Every other obgyn has called me in the past AND NOT WANTED TO CHARGE ME. I find her practices offensive and very antiquated. I also date bio identical hormone replacements and referenced something that is not bio identical, but one that no… longer should be prescribed bc it caused cancer. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. I was traumatized and am still angry. FIND A DIFFERENT DOCTOR.

I've never sought out a site to leave a review for a doctor whose service did not meet my needs or expectations, but I feel compelled to comment on my visit yesterday with Dr. Shah. It was by far the worst, least helpful, most unpleasant consultation I've ever had with a doctor. First, the office staff made me pay before telling me that the doctor was running a half hour late. Then, after I filled out the paperwork and specifically stated why I was seeing Dr. Shah, Dr. Shah met with me in her office and asked why I was there. She didn't even bother to review my file before beginning the consultation. I suppose it was an attempt at establishing rapport when she asked why I was there and responded to my explanation of coming to the office because of its proximity to my home by asking what my husband does for a livingâ??completely apropos of nothing related to my visit or health. After transitioning awkwardly from an introduction in which she showed absolutely no interest in my… background or profession, needs or health, she explained that she couldn't actually fulfill the main purpose of my visit because she was not an OB-GYN. Not her fault, but a major waste of my time that wouldn't have happened if the staff at the office had cleared up some confusion at the time of my scheduling. The main problem with the visit, aside from the wasted time and her clear lack of interest was her incredible condescension in discussing my issues. I've never been spoken to like that by any doctor, ever. Not only was it insulting, it wasted time and shut down productive discussion. I ended up not even bringing up my third reason for the visit because I just wanted to get out of there. Sad. Dr. Shah is probably a very competent surgeon, but I can't recommend her for a general gynecology consultation. Really, I want my money back for the appointment, but it seems that isn't an option.
