Dr. Amy Broach

I have seen Dr. Broach for several appointments now and I'm thankful she's my GYN. She's knowledgeable and skilled at what she does. She's happy to answer questions that I have and I haven't ever felt like she brushed me off. She is direct and to the point. Friendly but also efficient. As a nurse, I don't need my Dr. to coddle me. I need them to be good at what they do and I feel Dr. Broach is.

A month before surgery with Dr. Broach, I had a vaginal ultrasound that revealed a ground glass echogenic cyst. All Dr. Broach said to me about the cyst was that she could remove it during the surgery. She did not discuss with me how 1) A ground glass echogenic cyst is indicative of an endometrioma and endometriosis (Most likely stage 3 or 4 by the time such a cyst is present). 2) Any surgical tampering with ovary reduces ovarian function with respect to conceiving. Since my surgery, I've spoken to four other GYNs, all of whom have confirmed that ground glass echogenic cysts on ultrasound are CLASSIC endometrioma. One went so far as to say if a GYN isn't aware of that, they shouldn't be a GYN. It begs the question, did Dr. Broach not notice this on the ultrasound report and/or didn't suspect I have endometriosis? Or did she know but purposely didn't tell me? If the latter, why wouldn't she tell me? It's especially concerning since at my post op, she mentioned she wasn't looking… for endo when she went in. Perhaps she didn't tell me because I could have researched more and learned that *excision* surgery for endo is the gold standard for treatment, something she doesn't/isn't trained to do. Very few GYN surgeons are additionally trained in excision of endo (most do ablation or cauterization - which often make symptoms worse). Post op, the one and only treatment option she offered me for endo was hormone therapy. She said to me something along the lines of, "Don't google it, you'll just read about the scary side effects. Just take it." No mention of excision surgery as an option. On top of all this, for my surgery she did open surgery/laparotomy as opposed to laproscopy. She said she recommended this because she could see everything better. Once again, more research and other GYNs confirmed, laparoscopy is better than seeing with the naked eye because the image is magnified.

Dr. Broach was very rude at my appointment. She literally rolled her eyes at me during the entire appointment. She told me that I didn't have endometriosis in my pelvic and only in one localized spot. Keep in mind this is the first appointment with her and last time I checked, the only accurate diagnosis for endometriosis is through the LAP procedure. She wanted to put me on harmone therapy and I refused because of the side effects. She did a cervical biopsy which was extremely painful and she tells me she thinks the pain is coming from anticipation of the procedure, really. To add insult to injury, this doctor along with her nurse were laughing during the procedure. I will NEVER go back to her again. The worst experience I have ever had.

A very likable direct personality, very efficient appointment but took time to address my questions.

I absolutely adore Dr. Broach

I was very concerned as to why I was there, and when Dr. Broach walked in the room, she put me at ease immediately. Was very thorough in explaining what she was going to do and why. She made me feel better when I left her office.

I went to Dr. Broach and received nothing but the best care and information when asked questions. She spent as much time needed (not rushed) to explain everything to me. When surgery was performed she IS the only doctor that I have encountered to explain the situation to my husband not to mention the care she provided to me as well. Dr. Broach is the ONLY doctor /surgeon that I have encountered after surgery to actually help to get me into vehicle after surgery. Dr. Broach herself actually called me the evening of my surgery to see how I was getting along, there again something else that I have never encountered with another doctor/surgeon. I have never had such a great doctor in which Dr. Broach was. I would have her as a regular medical doctor if possible.

I have had a fair share of doctors, medical procedures and visits to gynecologists. I don't find that she is "cold" so much as she doesn't really convey warmth. I see the effort, she does try! But I struggle to obtain information from her when I ask questions. I'm an adult, I (believe it or not) have an education, and would love to know what she's thinking or why she's placing me on whatever medication. Her staff is top notch, I love the Duke Healthcare facility. She is very intelligent, you just have to take it with a grain of salt. I suppose I've been fortunate with doctors who explain what their notions are, or the mechanism behind what they're prescribing, or even the illness I have. But when I get lectures and a scratch-pad drawing of "this is where a baby lives," inside a picture of a womb, I can hardly keep my composure. I came to her office because I was referred for my endometriosis. I am not sure if I will return.

She is very rude, doesn't convey results in an appropriate time, doesn't explain results effectively when she does, and is patronizing to boot. She begins her short assessment with the statement "As you know from talking to my nurseâ?¦." which is really obnoxious since the nurse didn't explain anything in detail. I would never return to this self-centered doctor. Who needs it.
