Dr. Amy J Irwin, MD

She puts on a good showing for your first visit and through chemotherapy treatments. However once chemo treatment was completed she did not care about me or any concerns at all. I would wait for an hour from the beginning of my appointment time until I saw her. I had to take Letrozole, recommended by her for continued treatment for breast cancer. I began having severe nerve pain, muscle weakness in all of my limbs. I reported this as a concern as it began within 2 weeks of being on this medicine. She just would abruptly say “it’s not the letrozole”. Told me to lose weight and I was texting too much. I don’t use my phone, computer, etc much at all, and no more than before. I needed carpal tunnel release, and had to quit my job, coaching tennis because of the amount of pain I was experiencing. I continued to inquire about my symptoms and she was extremely dismissive and borderline hostile towards me as if I wasn’t just listening to her and ignoring what was going on daily for… me. I seriously tried to put up with all the side effects but they were joy getting better. She kept saying those are not side effects of letrozole, over and over. My new oncologist told me that he experienced a lot of patients who ended up needing carpal tunnel releases and said “if I have clients repeatedly coming in complaining about something being a side effect, then I treat it as a side effect and probably is”. This was 2017. The staff at VCS are wonderful and there are very good doctors there. However, Dr Irwin is not one. She needs to go back to reaearch

Like Dr. Favret, Dr. Irwin markets herself and the practice very well. You'll find her office constantly busy keeping the monetary flow incoming to Virginia Cancer Specialists. Her initial bright, charming demeanor fluctuates to long wait times, annoyance with questions, focus on herself, and a cold dismissiveness.

Dr Irwin is an exceptional oncologist. She is thorough in her exams and explains everything in detail to help patients understand the issues. She and her staff are professional and caring. I am so lucky I was referred to her for treatment.

I saw Dr. Irwin for a DVT - thankful it wasn't cancer treatment, so I know I am lucky. That said, I didn't feel she took my concerns or questions very seriously. She ended up pulling all my blood panels for underlying clotting disorders "...because of the new protocol. If you clot again, THEN we will run them." If I clot again? Well, I don't want to clot again!!! I could end up with more damage to my leg, another hospital stay (above the knee clots hurt like heck, by the way!), time out of work, a pulmonary embolism, and worse. I don't feel that is asking too much to have basic panels run. I ended up asking my primary to do them. I don't care if that is protocol, my insurance is great and it covered it. If she was able to see "something" in my bloodwork that made her think there wasn't a need to do it, then the patient should know. It just doesn't make one trust the physician when this sort of thing happens.

I was under the care of Dr. Amy Irwin for Breast Cancer. She is wonderful. In her care I have found her to be very attentive to my needs. She is exceptional in her knowledge and expertise. Additionally, she is kind and caring. I can not say enough good things about her.

I've only seen Dr. Irwin once, but will see her again shortly. She spent time to really ensure I understood all my options and was extremely supportive and knowledgable. I feel very secure in her care.

Dr. Irwin is very knowledgeable and caring. She is incredibly knowledgeable and always makes decisions based on her patients best interest.

Dr. Irwin is the most personable oncologist I have ever met. She is very through and explains any questions you may have. Being on time is not one of her strong points but I can deal with this because she is just that amazing. Her office can be a little strong with billing and payments. Let's not forget with are dealing with sick people!
