Life can be scary when you hear, at age 72, that there is a “mass” inside your head, just millimeters from your optic nerves, and you need surgery to remove it. You start really thinking about your mortality. Fortunately, one of the pastors at our church, who is a retired neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery, referred us to Dr. Anand Germanwala, at Loyola. We called for an appointment, not knowing how long we might have to wait for an appointment, but he was free the following day for a consult. My husband accompanied me, and we both immediately felt at ease. Dr. Germanwala has a very comforting presence, even as he is discussing the possible side effects and complications that could arise when having the surgery. His staff scheduled the necessary tests and appointments to prepare for the surgery, then scheduled the actual procedure, and everything ran like clockwork. I was still a little apprehensive, thinking about having the endoscopic endonasal surgery done, wondering… how they could remove the mass through my nose, but I felt complete confidence in the abilities of Dr. Germanwala and Dr. Chirag Patel, the ENT he partners with on these surgeries. I knew I would be in good hands. The procedure went well, and I was home less than 48 hours after it was complete, free of complications. Recovery has been a breeze. I would definitely recommend this surgical team to anyone needing the same type of surgery!
