We waited nearly three to six months for an appointment with Dr. Andrew Dauber at Children’s National in DC to discuss growth concerns and the possibility of growth hormone therapy for our child. Unfortunately, the visit was disappointing. Dr. Dauber appears to follow a very conservative philosophy where familial short stature is generally not treated. The conversation focused primarily on reasons not to pursue. We were hoping for a more collaborative discussion about our child’s growth and possible next steps. We also mentioned that we have friends, with a similar background as us, whose children have gone through growth hormone treatment and have been very happy with the results. Even after explaining that we were willing to pay out of pocket if insurance did not cover treatment, the possibility on treatment was largely dismissed. The visit felt like a missed opportunity to have a meaningful discussion about our child’s growth concerns. If you are looking for a pediatric… endocrinologist who takes a more proactive approach to evaluating and treating growth issues, you may want to consider other options.
