Dr. Anthony Sebastian Ekong, MD

High staff turnover. Called his staff lazy while with a patient. Also seems to have an attitude when with his patient.

Dr. Ekong and his staff (team) are professional experts in their field. I highly recommend Dr. Ekong as an eye specialist. Dr. Ekong and his team are efficient, informative and caring. Awesome!

Dr. Ekong treated me for over a year for macular degeneration. During that time I developed serious misgivings about his credibility. Dr. Ekong’s major failing is his almost complete reliance on data, and his complete dismissal of the your experience when it conflicts with his interpretation of that data. One horrific experience involved Dr. Ekong and myself arguing for literally thirty minutes about whether or not I was actually seeing what I was seeing. Because I shouldn’t have been seeing what I was seeing according to his data, he told me to my face that I was just wrong. He told me that the objective facts were in his favor, like it was some kind of sick contest and he was going to win at all costs. This is not how a doctor should behave. It was unprofessional to the extreme and it was undignified. Who am I going to believe, after all, him or my lying eyes? It boggles the mind that Dr. Ekong would think at this point in his career that this is an acceptable way to treat his… patients. This was by far the most objectified and dehumanized I’ve ever felt.

I was referred to Dr. Ekong a few years ago and was very happy with his knowledge, expertise, care and top-notch staff. For a year, he was unavailable in Bangor so I went to a very large practice in the area and was mightily unimpressed, I felt like a number. I was there for almost 2 hours (dilation, of course, but still) and saw the doctor for less than 3 minutes. When Dr. Ekong set up on Mount Hope Avenue, I was very happy and have been with him since. And will stay until he retires which I hope is a long, long time!

I had an emergency referred to Dr Ekong for retinal tears. He was available when many doctors were not, due to a holiday. The situation was very difficult because I also had a bad cataract (which I was days away from fixing when this happened) which prevented a good view of the retina. I also had a broken vessel and blood in my vitreous, which provided a poor view and absorbed energy from the laser. Despite the obstructions and poor view, Dr Ekong was able to laser one of the tears well enough to get me to a larger hospital without a retinal detachment. It was, frankly, quite painful because Dr Ekong had to use high power to get past the blood, but he did what needed to be done to help save my vision, and for that I am very grateful. I was self-pay, and I think he gave me a very good deal for the work he did. He's extremely well educated and Maine is lucky to have him. My surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear (A world class hospital) said that he did a good job, especially under the… circumstances. They themselves tried to laser the 2nd tear for a long time but were unable to treat it without first doing a vitrectomy and removing the cataract. As noted in other reviews, he's not going to provide fun chit-chat, but he did correspond with my other doctor in a very professional way to help plan further treatment. I'm glad that Dr Ekong was available to treat me.

I recently saw Dr. Ekong on a same-day referral from a local optometrist. Dr. Ekong saw me promptly. He and his staff were superb. I then had to have laser surgery for a retinal tear. Mind you, I’m from out of town. The care was excellent. His concern for me was wonderful, and his skills were the best. I highly recommend Dr. Ekong to others. I’m a retired optometrist, and I recognize his outstanding skills.

Dr, Eking performed unnecessary laser surgery on me for supposed diabetic retinopathy. I went to other doctors after the second treatment was a failure due to agonizing pain and excessive voltage. Second & third opinion opthamologists found no reason for the laser treatment. I do not have diabetic retinopathy. He is arrogant in his manner with patients. Makes off the cuff inappropriate jokes.
