Dr. Avery Mcmanis Hoenig, PhD

Would give less stars if I could. I spent YEARS in therapy with her, and she never listened to me and only listened to my parents and only affirmed what they thought was the issue. Additionally, she 'treated' my gender dysphoria by insisting that I was not transgender and that was simply a manifestation of my OCD. I tried to advocate for a second opinion for myself, with a therapist of her choosing (because my parents were concerned that I'd pick someone that would just confirm what I believed, which was ironic). She said she would, but was clearly putting off doing it despite saying she was. It took me telling her that I knew she was putting it off and threatening to never speak to anyone in my family ever again once I left for college for her to miraculously have a referral ready by the next session. The first visit with the new therapist, they believed EVERYTHING I had thought was the actual issue, said I was probably misdiagnosed with OCD, and testing proved that accurate, as I… just have ADHD and Autism. Seeing her has caused near-irreparable damage to my relationship with my family, and has caused a SEVERE mistrust of medical professionals. Do not recommend. I might have honestly been better off not seeing anyone at all than seeing her.

Dr Hoenig saw our daughter (in jr high and early high school) for several years and got her through a very difficult time. She was excellent at listening. She came up with great coping strategies involving positive ways to think through situations as well as action steps. She really helped our daughter navigate her PTSD , anxiety and OCD using CBT methods so our daughter could function while she was healing from her hurts. Every time our daughter left an appt with Dr. Hoenig, she felt better and more positive. Dr. Hoenig was fantastic, and we are so grateful for her positive impact in our daughter's life.

She misdiagnosed my child for years. We spent thousands of dollars with this therapist. Thank goodness we finally received a correct diagnosis from another therapist and my child was able to get the treatment she needed and get better. Avoid Dr. Hoenig.
