Dr. Avi Julius Grunin, MD

I, like others, had never written a negative review of a doctor -- until I met Dr. Grunin. He gave me an incorrect diagnosis and then insulted me when I asked about other possible causes. Avoid this doctor, or else it may cost you when it counts!

I’ve never written a review before but I also had a bad experience with Dr Grunin. He seemed ok but was extremely defensive and condescending when I asked questions. If I was younger I would have felt very intimidated but I was practically laughing at his defensiveness. I went in with knee pain. He said the X-ray showed arthritis, gave me a cortisone shot and said to go to PT. After weeks with no improvement, my pt suggested that it may be something else besides the mild arthritis in the report, and to ask for an MRI. Dr Grunin left me a voice message, refusing to refer an MRI saying the X-ray clearly showed arthritis and if it got bad he could refer a knee replacement dr! As though he was calling my bluff or something. So I found a new orthopedist who was awesome. She looked at the X-ray and said she didn’t really see arthritis and asked if Grunin had looked at the right X-ray! I had an MRI that showed a small tear in my meniscus and a hairline fracture in my knee , a bakers cyst and… the very beginning of arthritis. I WASTED two months because of Grunin. I don’t think he’s happy with his job and it shows. Maybe he’s incentivized not to order tests, but I wouldn’t recommend him as an orthopedist.

He is simply awful. No empathy at all. I went to see him initially and he diagnosed me with bursitis. He gave me a cortisone shot and I felt relief but one month later, I was in excruciating pain again. When I returned, he asked me how I was and I was in so much pain that I literally started to cry. He told me to stop and that he could not do this if I could not stop. It was so rude and condescending! I am not someone who cries but I was in so much pain. He then did a cursory exam and declared that bursitis would not cause this much pain. I said, Ok, perhaps it it not bursitis. He then declared that he would not be giving me another shot. I replied that I did not ask for one. He was so rude and so condescending and lacked any empathy. I simply walked out. I would not recommend him at all. Simply horrible!!!!!

Definitely avoid. I have never felt compelled to write a review for a doctor before but my experience aligned with many others unfortunately. Condescending, rude, did not believe my pain, misdiagnosed my injury, and refused an MRI, which in fact did find a ligament tear. A truly horrible experience.

I've been a patient of Dr. Avi Grunin for the last 7 years, initially for my knee. Since then I've also sought his care for my back and shoulder. He is, without question, one of the BEST MEDICAL PROVIDERS I have ever had. Always kind and very respectful. Avi is so present and able to listen in a way all doctors should treat their patients. His analysis is thoughtful, knowledgable and considerate. I trust his expertise and am so thankful for his exceptional care. I truly could't ask for a better orthopedic provider. I would recommend him 100%

Pay no attention to Negative reviews..Dr. Avi Grunin is an exceptional Physician My visit with him today was great, he was very professional & his bedside manner was very warm These are the kind of Dr's we all need in our lives when your sick. Thank you very much ??

The doctor listened attentively and gave recommendations based upon his analysis combined with my input. Very personable and overall good guy... relaxed attitude and very professional.

I'm SHOCKED by the reviews for Dr. Grunin. I'm seeing him for a broken foot at the Somerville office and he and his team have been outstanding. He is incredibly kind and has great bedside manner. I truly can't imagine him being condescending. He is a very down to earth clinician who I'm feeling lucky to be monitoring me during this recovery. I would recommend to anyone in need of an orthopedist.

Dr. Grunin is the worst clinician I have ever seen -- avoid him at all costs! Rude, condescending. No empathy. I left the appointment feeling judged, humiliated, stressed and without any answers or plan. He would not listen to me and was annoyed when I asked questions. Waste of time and of an expensive co-pay. I wish I had read the other *many* negative reviews prior to my visit. After my appointment, I also reached out to local friends who are patients at Dedham Medical to see if any of them had seen Dr. Grunin. I heard from two who described misdiagnosis, wasted time on the wrong treatment and lack of surgical ability. Seems like he has misdiagnosed quite a few knee patients based on his reviews, writing pain and loss of function off as nothing more than arthritis when in fact there were tears, ligament issues, etc. He was quick to dismiss my issue as arthritis, saying I needed to lose weight (mind you, while I'm not skinny, I'm a power yoga teacher, fit, active and healthy!). I… explained what I had thought I had done, but he looked me up and down and told me my weight was an issue. It was not in a professional manner -- it was in a judgemental, body shaming tone. Rather than empathy, I was given blame. I am still hobbling around in pain. My knee is locking. I'm concerned I have been misdiagnosed and now need to find another doctor. Also, the appointment started out with him scolding me for being late and telling me he therefore couldn't spend much time with me. It is not okay that I was late -- I apologized and had also called the office ahead of time to let them know I was running behind. He spoke to me like a child, and the appointment went downhill from there. He is passive aggressive and doesn't seem to like people or care about his patients. I did not know beforehand that his training is in pediatrics. Not sure why he is working in adult medicine. I'm also not sure how he was hired by Atrius Health given all of the negative feedback. I plan to bring the negative reviews to their attention (I met with the office supervisor directly after my appointment that same day). I'm suspect he has mistreated (literally and figuratively) many other patients. He is not only representing himself in that office but his treatment of patients is also a poor reflection on Dedham Medical and on Atrius Health. Please do not see this doctor. He should not be practicing anywhere!
