Dr Kara’s has the best bedside manor. He’s very caring. I was in a lot of pain.

Visit went fine. But tried to make new appt to schedule surgery and got answering service every time for days. Stuck on what to do if I am not going to get surgery from him. At least give me another suggestion for a surgeon

Dr. Ladas was honest and a caring Excellent surgeon... as a nurse, I highly recommend him. My surgery went perfectly. You can't even really see a scar now.

Prior to being referred to Dr Karas, I had required six surgical interventione by other surgeons, none of which corrected the problems. At my first visit, Dr Karas diagnosed me with bilateral neurogenic and vasogenic thoracic outlet syndrome and a right winged scapula. He took the time to clearly explain the problems, then patiently gave me options to treat them. At no time did I feel rushed into a decision. I elected to have bilateral rib resections done, one right after the other. That was nine years ago. Coincidentally, my daughter recently developed the same problem. My first step was to take her to see Dr Karas at Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore where he performed the same surgeries I had undergone. During my thirty years as a charge nurse in areas including cardio-thoracic surgical intensive care, critical care and emergency rooms in the Baltimore areas, my patients and their families would often ask me for my honest opinions on physicians. I can honestly say that Dr Karas is… the finest, most caring and compassionate doctor I have ever known. His surgical skills are second to none. During my hospital stays, everyone from nursing staff, X-ray technicians, his surgical team, all spoke highly of him. I was sent to Dr Karas with winging scapula, rolled shoulder, and pain after an injury to investigate possible Thoracic Outlet. The pain left me unable to perform daily tasks. Dr. Karas was unsure if I had TOS, but was still very insistent I have rib resection surgery. He explained he would know for sure during or after surgery, but it would likely make my shoulder deformity worse. I asked if I could go back to my highly physical rigging job, and hobbies such as climbing and kayaking after such a surgery. He said, and I quote, "No, Not you. You are a little girl, and little girls shouldn't be doing such silly things as lifting weights and climbing trees." He then suggested I become a ballerina. He tried to ease my concerns by reading me story of a patient of his who was able to sew her own brides maid dress, and said maybe I could too. Dr. Karas then tried to push the surgery by telling me all of his staff had the same surgery and were very happy. He became dismissive when I… wanted to discuss other options and told me to come back when I was ready to get serious.

I had Thoracic outlet surgery on left side Left rib section. The Dr. is very good and cares about his patients.

His office staff was very kind, courteous, informed and professional. Dr. Karas took so much time with me that it surprised me. Most surgeons want you in and out in minutes. He spent over an hour with me after we left the exam room discussing Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, showing me articles in journals. Discussing other area MDs that do the same surgery, other options (like Botax injections), etc. He explained the surgery, showed pics, recovery process, pain. He said he wanted to give me all the information that he had so that I could make an informed decision as to whether or not I wanted to have the surgery or seek a second opinion. He went over my xrays/MRIs and explained them as well and gave his opinion on other issues I had going on with my neck. I was highly impressed by the compassion and knowledge that he possesses. He was totally all about the patient and patient care which is almost gone with most of todays physicians. Thank you Dr. Karas and your staff for your… professionalism and kindness.

I cant imagine a better thoracic surgeon being out there. He is amazing. He is the most informed thoracic doctor that we have ever spoken to. He explains things well. He follows up well. He is old school and cares.
