Dr. Babak J. Mehrara, MD

Dr. Babak Mehrara says he respects his patients. I believe actions speak louder than words. If so, Dr Mehrara’s actions prove definitively that he, in fact, does not respect his patients. Of the 13 appointments I have had with Dr. Mehrara over the last four years, he was on time for exactly one of those. His tardiness ranges from 30 minutes to 2 1/2 hours with the average wait time being approximately 73 minutes after the scheduled appointment time. While waiting, no member of his staff will: (a) check to see if you require anything,or (b) manage your expectations as to when Dr. Mehrara might grace you with his presence. When Dr. Mehrara does show up, he never apologizes for being late or shows any appreciation for your patience. Additionally, he never knocks before entering the exam room - he just swans in. Taken together, Dr. Mehrara treat his patients more like nameless cattle in a pen than like clients or even human beings. If you expect his tardiness to be limited to the office… you would be wrong. I was the first surgery of the day on 2 separate occasions. Bot times he showed up for the pre-op consult well after the surgeries’ scheduled start time. The staff at the hospital joke about how he is never on time. On the occasion he left me rotting in an examination room for 2 1/2 hours, he brought a colleague to this post-surgical examination. He not only refused to introduce or identify this individual – this stranger – he also refused to remove him from the exam room when I requested he do so. In fact, Dr. Mehrara said that we could either get on with the examination or he would come back later. Remember, I had already been waiting 2 1/2 hours past my scheduled appointment time for this guy to show up. I don’t know about anybody else, but I call that coercion or emotional blackmail. As for his surgical skills, the first reconstruction resulted in one breast being significantly lower than the other and largely positioned under my left arm. I had to live like that for almost a year before he would agree to fix it. Even after the revision, that breast is still significantly lower than the other, and it is causing me not an insignificant amount of pain when I move certain ways. When this pain was brought up to Dr. Mehrara at the last appointment, I will, thankfully, ever have with the man, he dismissed my pain as phantom nerve pain, without considering the pain might be caused by the misplaced implant. Recently, I’ve seen a lot of articles about how doctors gaslight their female patients when they complain about pain. Such doctors routinely do not take the concerns of their patients seriously. I believe the Dr. Babak Mehrara is one of these. Finally, a few days after my breast were amputated, one of Dr. Mehrara’s nurses laughed at my emotional distress when I described to her, my horror at seeing the mutilated remains where my breast had been. That nurse never apologized for her callous behavior, and when I try to raise the issue with Dr. Mehrara, he didn’t want to hear it. Again, actions speak louder than words. I stand by my initial assertion that Dr. Mehrara does not, in fact, respect his patients in any way shape or form as evidenced by his actions.

I don’t care for his bedside manner or skill, not sure if since MSK is a teaching hospital he lets the students do the surgery while patient is asleep. Should have gone elsewhere from the start , but I did eventually and had some revisions.

Dr. Mehrara and his team at Sloan Kettering are compassionate, skilled, most knowledgeable in the most up to date treatments and simply the best! I had a bilateral mastectomy 13 years ago. He took the time to explain all of my options and helped me to make a decision I was most comfortable with. Along with my Breast Surgeon, they offered me an option of skin and nipple sparring surgery which I had no idea even existed back then. I highly recommend him and the entire staff at Sloan Kettering including all the nurses who were incredible ! I have the utmost respect for all the nurses whose job is not easy and just as important to the team. It is no surprise to me that Dr Mehrara in now recognized as Chief of Plastic Surgery.

I was referred to Dr Mehrara for a reconstruction following Mohs surgery on my nose but after meeting with him did not select him to do the reconstruction. He was dismissive of my questions and outright mean - actually telling me I would end up with a crooked nose or indented nose - those are exact quotes - if I didn’t agree to his approach to the reconstruction. I believe a doctor’s job includes answering questions, building a patients trust and showing some degree of empathy for the patients situation and concerns and demonstrating a willingness to work WITH the patient to achieve the best outcome possible. He demonstrated none of those qualities when I met with him.

My experience with Dr. Mehrara made an already traumatic experience, breast cancer surgery, that much worse. He had no empathy, was abrupt, was more interested in impressing his attractive intern than in responding to concerns I had about the outcome of the procedure. He misjudged my implant size which resulted in a forced additional surgery and acted as though he was doing me a favor by correcting his result. He was by far the worst doctor I have ever had, and I use him as an example of how not to treat patients to my daughter who is a premed student.

Dr Mehrara is not only a phenomal PS but he is a kind human being. He is definitely on point about what the outcome will be. I had two revisions by him and he made sure that I was happy with my results. He exceeded my expectations with my last revision. As a breast cancer patient, this is very important. I would highly recommend him as a plastic surgeon. Thank you Dr Mehrara was everything that you have done for me and all the other women you help.

An excellent surgeon and a true artist! Dr. Mehrara did my expander, swap, fat grafting and native side augment for symmetry. The results are truly beautiful and the best I have seen in an MX reconstruction - much better than I had dared to hope for. I could not be happier with the aesthetic results thus far. I have one surgery to go to reconstruct the nipple and some additional fat grafting. I have every confidence that Dr. Mehrara will do an excellent job as he has thus far. Cancer is a jarring experience, but he has been caring and skillful enough to have made all the difference in putting me back together. I look even better than I did before, and while I would gladly trade the results for a body that never had cancer, it is a nice consolation to look good and feel whole. I know that I could not have made a better choice in reconstructive surgeons. Truly the best!

He took the time to explain all of my options and helped me to make a decision I was most comfortable with. I have moved several times while undergoing my reconstruction and I can tell you that every doctor I have seen (all in top rated, big city hospitals) is amazed at how beautiful my reconstruction/implants look. Dr. Mehrara coordinated my care so I could get expanded in the cities where I was residing. I flew back and forth to him for all the big surgeries. My scars are barely visible, I healed well, and my implants look amazing. Doctors can not believe that I had a bilateral mastectomy, that is how amazing a surgeon Dr. Mehrara is. I highly recommend him and would tell anyone I loved to go to him. Sloan Kettering does a great job coordinating your care if you are flying in from out of state, which I was. Dr. Mehrara is an amazing… doctor. I agree with others, that he easily could be in California making a fortune, but the fact that he chooses to help people in need, recover from horrible diagnoses, tells you about his spirit. He is kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and extremely skilled. I am so incredibly blessed that I found him.
