A certified physician assistant at Beaufort Memorial Surgical Specialists and a recent physician assistant studies graduate, Bailey Toulson assists our board-certified general surgeons in the operating room and the clinic. She evaluates patients before and after surgery as well as patients referred to the practice from the emergency department and hospital floors.Areas of Expertise- Pre- and Post-operative Care - Care before and after surgical procedures, including patient education and monitoring patients after their procedures.- Surgical Assist - Working under the supervision of a surgeon to perform pre- and post-operative procedures such as prepping patients for surgery, closing incisions and applying wound dressings.- Emergency Room Consultation - When a patient's status or test/imaging results necessitate review by a general surgery provider to determine if their condition requires surgery.BackgroundWhile Toulson credits her lifelong love of science for her decision to work in …medicine, it was getting hip surgery at 16 years old that made her want to become a Physician Assistant (PA). Sensing the young Toulson's distress over the impending surgery, Toulson's PA took the time to comfort her and explain what was to come.
"I like that I can take that time as a PA to educate my patients,"" says Toulson.
In college, Toulson earned a scholarship for academic achievement and shadowed surgeons in Portugal while studying abroad. She fulfilled 1,121 clinical hours during her physician assistant graduate program.
Born and raised in a small, rural town near Atlanta, Toulson came to love Beaufort when attending the town's Oyster Festival during her time at South University. She and her husband live in Savannah with their two Australian shepherds, Bucky and Stark.
