A native of India, Dr. Balagangadhar R. Totapally earned his MBBS degree, MD and DCH (postgraduate diploma in child health) at Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. Dr. Totapally completed his pediatric residency at Hurley Medical Center, Flint, Michigan, one year of fellowship training in neonatology at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada, and a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Miami Childrens Hospital, Miami, Florida.

Dr. Totapally is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics with subspecialty certification in Pediatric Critical Care. Dr. Totapally is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom), and Society of Pediatric Research and is a Fellow of …the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and American College of Chest Physicians. He has published more than thirty scientific articles and is involved in several current research projects. His present areas of research interest include effects of carbon dioxide in sepsis and resuscitation. He serves on several hospital committees as chairperson or member. Dr. Totapally actively participates in the PICU-focus group sponsored by NACHRI and is the MCH medical-coordinator for the VPS database. Dr. Totapally oversees MCH participation in the National Registry for CPR (NRCPR). He is the Director of Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program and Associate Medical Director of Division of Critical Care. Dr. Totapally is also the Medical Director of PALS program at MCH.

Dr. Totapally is actively involved in several committees and quality improvement programs at MCH. He is the Chairman of ICU committee, Co-chair of Resuscitation Committee, and member of GMEC. He leads implementation of Rapid Response Team and Pediatric Early Warning Scoring at MCH.
