Dr. Barbara S Kirschner, MD

I have four kids under the age of 8, all of whom have had issues needing to be addressed by Dr. Kirschner. She also cared for me and my two brother when we were kids. She has always patiently listened to our concerns, offered helpful solutions, and took genuine command of the medical situations which often involve extensive consultation with or referral to her colleagues in other specialties. Thank you Dr. Kirschner. You are irreplaceable in our lives. Please never retire.

Dr. Kirschner was our fourth gastro dr we tried in three years. She fully engaged herself in my son's very rare case of UC/Crohns until she figured out an appropriate medication other than prednisone. She utilized all her fellow colleagues around the country to see if anyone seen anything like my son's symptoms until she found a solution. My son has gone a year with no flare ups and has had his teenage life returned back to him. I highly reccomendation her.

My son was only 3.5 when first diagnosed with Crohn's. I had read a book that Dr. Kirschner authored on the disease. After his initial diagnosis I called her for a second opinion. It was decided that he would have to be subjected to all the test again so I declined and stayed with his current GI. Two years later after being dissatisfied with his care I contacted Dr. Kirschner's office. The doctor herself took my call and remembered my son. We promptly were in her office for a consultation. Dr. Kirschner spent 3.5 hours with us. Our first experience with Dr. Kirschner was so comforting that she continued as our son's doctor for 18 years. He only switched to an adult GI doctor because hehad turned 21 years old. He would have been content to continue with Dr. Kirschner forever. For 18 years as frustrating as this disease is, she always gave us hope. After exhausting so many medications and treatments I remember Dr. Kirschner telling me and I quote " we are never without options". That was… the truth. She never stopped looking for new treatments, working with our son and us to make us comfortable with needed surgeries, infusions,feeding tubes, research and experimental medications. She always listened and supported. Provided nutritionalists, endocrinologists and respected our need to look at alternative therapies. I remember one Sunday afternoon she called us at home. My first reaction was that she was calling about a bad test result. It turned out that she called to tell our son to turn on the football game because one of the NFL players had Crohn's. She wanted him to see that kids go on to be successful adults and overcome the obstacles caused by the disease. I think this worked better than any medication for him at that moment. My son, my husband and I will forever be grateful to Dr. Kisrchner for doing all she could to give him a quality of life. Now as a 28 year old he is thriving. Working, married, etc. His disease is still problematice. He has exhausted all current meds and research trials and he is facing his third major surgery. However as he now says, "don't worry Mom, there are always options". Our past experiences with Dr. Kirschner is the reason I do and will continue to recommend Dr. Kirschner to anyone that asked my advice on treating Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis. We could imagne having gone any other way.

My daughter has had a recurrent issue with her disease which has kept her out of school and has been very difficult to manage. Dr. K has not just taken the time to guide us through this, but her care plan has really made a difference in our daughter's quality of life. Our family owes you a debt of gratitude. Thank you, Dr. K.

Unfortunately, science does not always offer a simple understanding or an easy solution to IBD. What science does have to offer is Dr. Kirschner, and she is wonderful. Thank you for caring so much about our daughter and helping us through the difficult and frustrating times. Because of you, our daughter wants to be a doctor!

We have known Dr. Kirschner for over 7 years - helping my son on several occassions since he was 7 years old - and cannot say enough nice things about she and her staff. She is not only knowledgable but caring and has an interesting sense of humor. We are very greatful to have our son in her care.

I agree with that her answer is more steriods and higher doses of Remicade, she does not look into the cause or the problem. Aweful beside manners, very quick to judge, her nurse is aweful, rude, and doesn't like you calling with questions. I have never felt so demeaned and belittled.Doesn't care to see your child in the hospital but has time to judge the family and make acusations. Doesn't beleive the symptoms of the child and doesn't do much except for give more drugs that can cause more harm to the child and cause more side effects. It's really sad that it is not her goal to find things out just give more drugs, while you watch your child suffer and get no help or support.

While she spent a lot of time going over tests and talking about my son's history, in initial visit, since then I can get no response to questions and her nurse is about the rudest person I have ever had to deal with. If she gets a different nurse, she may have some knowledge to share, but so far have only gotten a lot of arrogance with no results from a lot of expensive medication.

My young son had suffered from severe crohns for several years. He had seen several physicians but none could get it under control. In three years, he hadn't grown an inch or gained 5 lbs. He had completely fallen off the growth chart for boys his age, and suffered constant discomfort. Dr Kirschner put him on a regimen that began to show results in just a few weeks. Under her care now for 7 years, he has been symptom free and is average height and weight. We cannot say enough about the care received, and the compassion shown by Dr Kirschner.
