Dr. Barry Steven Unger, MD

BEWARE the front desk person at Dr. Barry’s office Julia Alvarenga is unprofessional, unethical, shady and very rude. I saw Dr Barry and he was very kind during the visit, my brother has been seeing him for 15 years. During the visit my conditions were discussed and he said my prescriptions would have no problem refilling. Upon leaving I fainted in the elevator. I had not fainted since I was a child- this was alarming and We went back into Dr Barry's office. Julia showed zero concern and actually tried to charge us for Dr Barry merely looking at me after fainting!! I came home and threw up for hours and went to the hospital ER. We told Dr Barry via email to keep him in the loop and Julia intercepted and sent me THREE responses that discriminated against me because I dont have insurance as she cruelly insisted I need to be treated elsewhere! We informed her it is not her place to dictate where we get healthcare and that she was discriminatory against us. When the prescriptions ran out… we politely requested Dr Barry to call in the refills as he had said he would. Julia Alvarenga first tried to make us come in for another visit and than she actually said " we need to keep the office afloat" I reminded her that I had these conditions when I saw Dr Barry, they were iscussed and DR Barry said refills would not be an issue, Julia Alvarenga than said "whos going to pay for my time" she actually told me I was responsible for her paycheck!! I have never had a Dr's office charge for refills. Julia Alvarenga should not be working in any Dr's office. We suspect Dr. Barry does not know his front desk secretary is doing these outrageous, shady actions and would be shocked if he does. Julia Alvarenga should not be working for any doctor she is unethical, shady and unprofessional. We have never been the victims of such cruelty and unprofessional unethical shady behavior.

My husband, an addict and alcoholic, went to Dr. Unger for years. He gave my husband increasing doses of Paxil despite my daughter and I calling and writing him that there was something wrong and asking him if he had given my husband anything new. He kept saying no, nothing new, despite giving him increasing dosages. Over 9 months, my husband got worse became psychotic and had to be hospitalized. It turned out that my husband was bipolar and Paxil is completely counter-indicated with bipolar. This led to a series of hospitalizations and repercussions from the use of Paxil. My husband lost his law practice and we lost our house. This doctor is an internist and should have never prescribed this medicine and ignored by pleas of increasingly bizarre behavior.

Dr. Unger fully cognizant that my husband as an addict. He was him for over 20 years. When my husband's behavior dramatically changed and not for the better. Both my daughter and I notified him of this alarming behavior by telephone and fax. I directly ask him if he had given him any new drugs and Dr. swore up and down he had not. In fact, on the day, we told him of our concerns, he gave my husband another prescription doubling his dose of paxil. Long story short, he did not follow manufacturer's instructions and my husband went psychotic and was institutionalized. He has never been the same, he lost all his clients ( he is lawyer) he has extreme massive manic episodes, he stopped working and took all our money out of his retirement account without my knowledge and loans against his life insurance. He also prescribed this man who was impotent, bottles and bottles of viagra and cialis as well as tenger is still out there, potentially harming people or worse.

Dr. Unger is an excellent caring doctor who you can count on to be there for you. He is also well respected among his peers.
