Dr. Brian James Neuman, MD

After a spinal fusion and compression procedure for back pain my mom was left worse off. Her fingers started to ball into a fist, worse back pain and trouble walking and doing daily activities. Neuman, John’s Hopkins MD, provided no explanation and no justifiable plan forward: Her hands, back, and mobility will never be the same. Be aware.

Started with back surgery ended with stroke and him going on vacation.

For years I suffered with back pain, and I did nothing but endure. In nursing school we are told “you will have back pain” and given a few lessons on ergonomics. When you graduate you are given your cap, gown, cold hands, the obligatory squeaky shoes and back pain. I worked for over a decade taking Motrin like dinner mints, sure that this was just my fate and the price one pays for the privilege of caring for others. After all, I was told in school that all nurses have back pain, so I knew I’d not been promised a pain-free life. One day I woke up and my left leg wouldn’t move. I now knew this was very very bad, and the nurse became the patient. I remain eternally grateful that Dr. Neuman is who the ER docs consulted that night. My spine was a DISASTER! Dr. Neuman took the time to go over all of my MRI images with me, pointing out all of the problems and explaining his strategy for how to address them in surgery. I felt comfortable for being addressed as a human, he never once… tried to talk down to me or minimize my pain and problems. He answered all of my questions and even though I was apprehensive, because surgery is a big deal, I was confident in his skills to fix my spine. The surgery was a long one, when he got in there he spotted other problems that hadn’t been apparent on the imaging, and he addressed them. He is thorough, methodical, and genuinely cares. Dr. Neuman takes the time to do the job right! He does not treat patient surgeries like they are a timed competition. I had a successful recovery, and no post-operative infections. I would not be able to walk today if I hadn’t been on his table. I would confidently crawl through hot coals across multiple states to see him for follow up care and if future surgeries are needed. I look forward to seeing him at follow up appointments because he is one of those rare surgeons who also possesses a compassionate bedside manner. Not only am I able to walk, but I was able to return to work within a few months of the surgery, and am still able to enjoy a high quality of life at home and with my leisure activities. I cannot recommend Dr. Neuman fervently enough.

Dr Neuman did my back surgery a year and half ago. The surgery was very successful and I have been pain free since. Just had a follow up appointment and every one was courteous and professional.

I've been seeing Dr. Neuman for 4 years, since 2016, for lumbar herniations. He's amazing. Great demeanor puts me at ease. He's accommodating and caring, and an active listener - not to mention extremely knowledgable and relatable. I had spinal decompression surgery under his care and I don't regret it whatsoever. Dr. Neuman is a very compassionate and caring physician dedicated to giving the best patient care. He listens to patients concerns and honestly presents all options. Dr. Neuman is very knowledgeable and has an excellent bedside manner. He has performed a spinal fusion on me with great results and I would highly recommend him.
