Born in Durban, South Africa, Bruce A. Hook, MD, joined Lutheran Medical Group in January 2011 when his former group, Indiana Ohio Heart joined LMG. He joined IOH in 1993 and introduced new techniques in vascular surgery to the group.
Dr. Hook graduated from the University of Witwaterrand Medical School in Johannesburgh in 1978 before completing internships in general surgery and internal medicine at Edendale Hospital in Pietermartizburg, South Africa. He joined the South African military in 1980, rising to the rank of full lieutenant and earning a diploma in aviation medicine. Upon completion of his military obligation, Dr. Hook practiced as a primary care physician in England and Canada while completing Basic Medical Sciences for Surgeons studies at the Royal College of Surgeons in London, England.
Dr. Hook completed a five-year general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Boston, where he won the Zupancec Award for surgical excellence and the …Tracy Award for outstanding performance in vascular surgery. He completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans where he focused on thoracic, trauma and adult and pediatric congenital heart surgeries and transplantation.
Dr. Hook is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Vascular Technology, the North American Society of Phlebology, the International Society for Endovascular Surgery, the Indiana Thoracic Society, the Indiana State Medical Association and the Fort Wayne Medical Society.
