Dr. Bruce James Rice, MD

Highly skilled surgeon cleared my sinus infection through performance Caldwell Luc procedure performed in 1985 when I was a student at U.C. Berkeley. Great doctor. Highly recommend.

Dr. Rice had one of the worst bedside manners I've ever seen in a doctor. His brusque "explanations" were brief at best, with minimal talking and communication of what was wrong. I would very strongly discourage ANYONE from ever coming to see him. He did almost nothing to help the patient feel comfortable and was extremely condescending. For the sake of anyone who is deciding whether or not to come to this doctor, I would urge you to choose a different one. Unless you are looking to be patronized and smirked at with a condescending look.

He actually LAUGHED at me when I told him I thought I might have acid reflux due to a sore throat, belching, lump in throat and vomiting. Then told me it was just anxiety. Maybe I made a mistake in telling him I take medication for anxiety. I'm almost certain that's not what it is (because I'm actually less anxious than I've ever been and I've had anxiety for years without these problems occuring previously) - and even if that's what it turns out to be (because I will be seeking another opinion) I felt that he was condecending and rude and spent about 2 minutes with me. Seemed to be in a rush.

Said I needed a voice coach, that my voice loss, and my stopping breathing was psychological. Ended up in ER, then a 2nd opinion then emergency surgery within a 2 week period for a polyp in my trachea.

Do not see this doctor. I went for a follow-up visit after a STAT MRI. He did not look at the MRI. When he read the report, (for the first time while I was in the room with him) I had to correct him multiple times as to what was on the paper. He was unaware of which cavities were affected even though it was clearly stated in the report. He interrupted me and told me to rest and see him again in a week. It was very disconcerting. A doctor who does not read critical diagnostic results should not be practicing.

I was a little apprehensive after seeing the negative reviews here, but kept my appt with dr. Rice. I'm glad I did. He's definitely older, and I'm more comfortable with an older doctor over somebody very young. He was very nice, he very patiently listened to my ailments and made notes, and was gentle with his exam. I have confidence in his skill and experience, and I'm very glad I went, as he reassured me that I probably don't have a tumor or need a CT scan at this point. I think with a lot of things involved interactions, you give what you get. Some patients are just difficult and have some kind of axe to grind.

My first visit - while I was in the waiting room, he was screaming at a cancer patient because the patient wanted a 2nd opinion!! Also, his waiting room was extremely dusty, a terrible sign, considering he's seeing people with allergies and sinus problems! I have chronic sinus problems, he ordered a CT scan, told me the scan was normal and there was nothing wrong with me and said he could refer me to a psychiatrist. (The next ENT doc I saw said my CT scan was definitely not normal and proceeded to come up with a plan for my severe sinusitis.
