Dr. Carol Bloomquist Mikulka, MD

I’m very surprised to see the bad reviews on this site. I saw Carol for a year, and I am deeply grateful to her. I was on the desperate side looking for a therapist. I must have called 10 docs and couldn’t get in anywhere. Ann, her office manager, must have heard it in my voice and got me in the very next day. I’ve been to two other psychiatrists in my life and they saw me for 15 minutes, prescribed some drugs that never worked, and basically said good luck. Carol listened to me like a counselor, talked through my history, and figured out medication that stabilized me for the first time in 20 year. If I hadn’t been transferred out of state, I’d be seeing her still. Believe me, my entire family is grateful to Carol.

Very expensive virtual visit in which she was extremely rude and condescending. I’m honestly shocked anyone sees her regularly. Absolute negativity. Stay away and find a competent professional.

She is just nasty. I was warned about her "tough love standpoint". No. The beginning of my sixth session (15 minute sessions so she had only known be for a hour and fifteen minutes total), I can to her because I had really racy thoughts. She said, Day 1, that when that happens to call in and get me back on Lithium. She denied it, stared at me repeating how unstable I am. Then she went off of how she is retiring next year and most of her colleagues are retiring so she can't do anything for me anymore. "Next time" I was supposed to bring in a list of mental health providers and she would "help" me find a new doctor. Needless to say I left, after all of this happened in 15 minutes, and cried in my car. She is dangerous. I have found a new doctor in Lake Mary how is wonderful. BTW: My friends are awesome and I love them and they love me, but the two of them are gorgeous, and I seriously think she is prone to asthetics. My friends who referred me told me about friends of theirs… that went to her and love her. Others didn't. Strange that the well to do and fit are the ones that love her. Me and the ones that left her aren't the cutest nor richest, but there is a pattern there. Ahhhhh.... Venting is good. Beware on this complete Cee U Next Tuesday.

I found Dr Carol to be spot on with my diagnosis

My husband and I have had great success with Dr. Mikulka. Her style is no-nonsense, which has really worked for us. She is not going to tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. Her tough love approach is much more to our liking than those professionals whose style is more soft and timid. She is fair, consistent, and demonstrates that she truly cares about her patients' well being. My husband is typically skeptical of most new people he meets, and trust does not come easy for him. He really does like Dr. Mikulka and, more importantly, he completely trusts her. We highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for someone to talk to and get the results you're looking for.

Hands down the worst mental health person, unable to say professional, I have ever encountered. Cavalier with responses, arrogant and mean spirited. She was recommended to me, I read her poor reviews but decided to make an appointment based on the recommendation. She overbooked, rushed the allotted 15 minutes, spewed out several diagnoses based on 5-10 minutes of peppering me with questions, had time to refer me to a counselor she shares an office with and managed to discredit the profession all in one fell swoop. Pure genius! Had she been my first encounter with a psychiatrist it would be quite a long time before entrusting my mental health with someone else. Despicable person.

I went to see this doctor since she was one of the few who took my insurance and had an appointment available in the near future. I arrived early, no one else was waiting and I still was seen over 30 minutes past my scheduled time. She was rude from the get go berating me because I wasn't making eye contact (I was nervous). Cut me off several times while I was talking and tried to tell ME how I felt. She labeled me as codependent based on one sentence, and prescribed me meds for someone bipolar (I have a doctor's diagnosis of Anxiety and depression). She spent maybe 30 minutes with me, told me I had to find myself a therapist or I would end up miserable and alone- very rude!!!

If you're reading all of the reviews you will think she is a terrible psychiatrist, but that's not true. The first time I went I had the same experience as the other person that had her mother in the waiting room, when she found out she was my mother, she made her come in even though I specifically said I did not want her to go in( but she did apologize during my next session). My first impression of her was that she is blunt, but in a good way because she will tell you exactly what she's thinking without holding back and you'll get so see what's truly bothering you. You will notice that most of the people that wrote her a bad review only went to her once! But I kept going to her and realized that she does have my best interest in mind and wants me to get better. She is not the most loving person, so if you're looking for someone who is, then she is not right for you. But she is not mean/abusive or a monster like some people are saying, she will just be totally honest in what she sees… in front of her. The reason I took out one star out is because of their office assistant , in my experience she has been rude and seems like she doesn't want to be there. Also, if you want to reschedule your appointment you have to do it 24hrs before (since I see her every 6 weeks I tend to forget when I made it and my schedule changes) and the office assistant calls you to remind you of your appointment after the 24hrs have passed, so if I want to reschedule I have to pay.

To say that Mikulka's beside manner is "bad" would be credit that she doesn't deserve. Her bedside manner is downright HORRIFYING and borders on abuse. Prior to this appointment I was seeing another doctor, but due to an accounting error on behalf of their office I incurred a 3 digit debt that I could not afford before my high dose SSRI prescription needed to be refilled again, and the error had yet to be worked out with the admin staff. Thus, my insurance provider led me to Mikulka, so that I could get a refill before I started withdrawal from my SSRI. Scheduling was easy, I got in very quickly for a brand new patient. The office assistant was fine. I got in pretty quickly there as well, so my appointment differed from previous poster's experiences in this way. In my bad I had written list of my symptoms, one that I had prepared beforehand so that I could give her a detailed picture of my health. It turns out that I didn't need it, however, because Mikulka had decided… within about 8 minutes and almost zero history of my mental health that I had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I had been treated for nearly two years prior to this and was NEVER given a diagnosis even close to that! For Mikulka to dole out a serious diagnosis like that with little to no investigation horrifies me, but reading these reviews saying similar are even scarier. It was a reminder to always be extremely cautious about the doctor you choose to manage your mental health. As an emotional person I tend to cry when I am stressed out, but Mikulka immediately dismissed my tears not as being a person stressed or emotional, but as somebody "unstable" and "in crisis".. which leads me to my second biggest complaint about her: Mikulka has zero respect for privacy. I am 25 years old and a diagnosed agoraphobe who does not drive, so my mom was gracious enough to give me a ride and wait in the lobby for moral support. Upon hearing that my mother had joined me and was waiting, Mikulka demanded to bring her into our session, even though I protested repeatedly and am a 25 year old woman who's mother has zero guardianship over. I was awestruck at this serious violation of boundaries but was at a loss to complain, she asked my mother to join us against my wishes. The most worrisome thing about my visit to Mikulka was how I, as an abuse survivor, was so deeply triggered by her aggressive nature. She berated me for 15 minutes while swearing she would not treat me, that she could not help me, I did not try hard enough, etc; and through the latter half of the treatment telling me that she would, in fact, treat me and that she found me smart, creative, etc. Which is it, are you going to treat me, or aren't you? I am not an on again/off again high school paramour, I am a patient. Her unusual method of breaking me down and then attempting to rebuild me, to rewrite the history of the the first half of our appointment, reminded me of the rollercoaster of abuse and how frightening it is to watch somebody tear you apart and just as easily try and put you back together without so much as a bat of a lash. Needless to say that I will not be returning to Mikulka, and I would advise anybody wanting to visit with her to proceed with extreme caution. She was brutally cold and had a serious lack of empathy, something I find unusual for a mental health clinician.

The appointment was not off to a great start when I was seen 30 mins late. Immediately in the beginning of the appointment before hearing of my situation, I was told I should not be seeing my trusted therapist of five years- because of a recent move. Instead I was instructed to see the therapist in her office that does not take insurance. As off-putting as that was I continued on with appointment. I found her manner to be slightly dismissive and aggressive. Talking quickly and not taking my previous diagnosis or care into account. She also wrote me a prescription for a new medication that I had not asked for (or needed), citing that a drug rep had recently told her about it and wanted to see how I would react. This made me feel like a guinea pig and not a patient. Overall I did not feel like my thoughts and past treatments were being valued. I will not be going back.
