Dr. Cary Steven Kaufman, MD

Dr. Kaufman is a professional, brilliant, skilled, thorough, attentive & compassionate breast cancer surgeon. Recently, I was diagnosed through a yearly mammogram with breast cancer. Several years ago, my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer as well. Dr. Kaufman was her surgeon and I immediately asked if he was still treating patients. Without a shadow of doubt, I knew that I wanted him as my doctor and surgeon. I am post surgery now and the care I received and am still receiving has been phenomenal. Dr. Kaufman has amazing communication skills and I have never felt rushed in an appointment. He takes time with his patients, making sure you understand your course of treatment. His office staff is friendly and professional. Their skills and kindness are much appreciated. Surgery was very successful for my Mom years ago, and I am happy to say for myself as well. There are not enough words to thank Dr. Kaufman and his office staff for taking such great care of their patients.… Amazing!

A new diagnosis of breast cancer is terrifying to anyone, but being in Dr. Kaufman’s expert hands was the most reassuring experience I can imagine. He has an immense depth of experience with breast cancer and its surgical and nonsurgical treatments, his entire career, and he lavishes time on every visit and consult and follow up. He thought very carefully about my case, and participated in shared-decision-making with me while gently educating me and even sharing scientific papers, so I could make a good decision. I was lucky enough to have a truly beautiful surgical outcome, too. Literally Hollywood-plastic-surgery quality! I didn’t have any postoperative complications, but I know other patients who’ve had minor postoperative issues, and he was very responsive and caring for these people. His entire office staff is similarly very friendly and understanding! I am in medicine myself, and am used to surgeons being brusque and curt and busy, and Dr. Kaufman manages only to be busy, but… never curt or brusque. I would refer any of my family or friends to him, and have.

Dr. Kaufman’s level of care and caring are superior in quality and surpass standard excellence. I have few regrets in my life, but one is that I did not initially go to him when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I instead went to a local general surgeon who mutilated my breast. If I had gone to Dr. Kaufman, with his expertise and dedication to Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, my breast cancer journey would have had a much more favorable outcome. When I had post-surgery complications, the local general surgeon was not helpful; in fact, he did not know what to do. I contacted Bellingham Regional Breast Center and Dr. Kaufman not only graciously fit me in to his schedule but also provided immediate relief. It took a few visits to completely resolve my complication and Dr. Kaufman communicated at every visit what to expect for the next visit. He is an educator and I appreciate the knowledge he imparts. He allayed my anxiety and that allowed me to focus on healing. I recently visited Dr.… Kaufman again, this time for advice. He remains the calm, caring, and extremely knowledgeable surgeon that I first met fourteen years ago. I felt a bit awkward asking about symmetry surgery after so many years; however, once again, Dr. Kaufman alleviated my concerns and explained why this is not uncommon. Thanks to Dr. Kaufman, I now feel emotionally and physically ready to pursue corrective surgery. I wish he could do this surgery but I am grateful he remains focused on breast disorders, specifically breast cancer surgery, for those who need his services. Dr Kaufman is an excellent surgeon with many years of experience. Since most patients do not see an oncologist until after their surgery, he has prepared instructional materials to help patients understand the types and stages of breast cancer and generally recommended procedures for each, explaining why and how they work. He also has tips and instructions to aid in patient recovery. He will take the time needed with each patient so that they can move forward without fear and with all the information they need to make informed choices about their treatment.

Dr. Kaufman is an educator and a patient advocate. I believe that to achieve optimal outcome in healthcare, the doctor needs to impart their knowledge and wisdom so that the patient understands what's going on. His bedside manner and willingness to engage in conversations with patients make him an excellent surgeon.

I am incredibly grateful to have had Dr. Kaufman as my surgeon after my breast cancer diagnosis. He is kind, compassionate, and extremely knowledgeable. With each appointment he thoroughly explained everything, answered every question, and never made me feel rushed. Surgery was successful without any complications. When Dr Kaufman came by to see me in recovery after removing my port, he said that my tears were due to the anesthesia. I can guarantee they were not. Those tears were for the gratitude and love I feel for the amazing care he gave me from start to finish. Though I had a great oncologist, Kaufman was the one who took the time to walk me through the process. He was incredibly knowledgeable and intuitive. I would have been lost without him.
