Dr. Chaitanya S Mudgal, MD

The best most compassionate surgeon I’ve ever known. He saved my hand. He’s not a man of many words, but he really cares about his patients. I’ll forever be grateful to him.

I saw Dr. Mudgal twice. He was OK at the first visit, but was so condescending and dismissive at the second that I will not go back to him again. He barely examined me but instead told me a very long story….a parable (which he thought would be reassuring and help me understand that my problem wasn’t serious). It was insulting. The opposite of compassionate. His fellow, who saw me first, took more time with me and seemed more interested in helping.

Dr. Mudgal is by far the worst provider at MGH I have ever been seen by. He has no compassion for his patients. Saw him for Carpal Tunnel and he refused to write job restrictions to my place of employment until after surgery. Rather pass the duty off to my pcp provider who does not specialize in orthopedics and hand. Believe he suffers from a egotistical perspective as he has to call all the shots. Talks over you. Sad when you don’t have Drs advocating for their patients anymore. Its all about the money. Rushes you out the office and disregards your concerns. He may be a good surgeon as far as performance but his attitude and demeanor lacks. My carpal tunnel is serious enough to have surgery but not serious enough to write restrictions. He does not care if you suffer at work until you have your surgery and makes money off it. Then he will write paperwork. Seems to me like Dr. Madgul is associated with corporate America. Your pain does not matter as if he is the one who is not… experiencing it. He also left the office door wide open and starts discussing your private health care information. Talk about violation of HIPPA. Sad when you don’t have Drs who care about your concerns anymore or the pain you are experiencing and all they want to do is cut you open before they are proactive in things they should be proactive in all the time.

They do not answer the telephone in their own office. The staff is rude. They do not respond to requests made in their own patient portal online. One of the most difficult medical providers that I have dealt with.

Condescending and dismisssive. Does not appreciate ‘whole picture’. Does not listen and talks at you not to you. He rates your need for care based on his opinion and is very obvious about it. Seems so different than the rest of the culture at mass general. But it screams of needing an overhaul in this instance. Approach and care not good.

A lot of reviews on here state that Dr. Mudgal is arrogant. So what? The results are what matters and Dr. Mudgal was the only doctor I went to who could diagnose a benign tumor in my left wrist after a battery of tests. All other doctors I went to misdiagnosed me. The surgery was a carpal tunnel and it went very well. I now have all muscle strength back in my thumb thanks to Dr. Mudgal.

I saw him for pain and numbness in my arm/hand. He was very dismissive, and after a very quick check up he concluded that there was nothing wrong with me. My pain and numbness continued for several months, and I got fed up and went back to my hometown to see an orthopedic doctor who was a family friend. He quickly suspected that I had herniated cervical disks from just from feeling my neck and observing my posture, and sent me to get an MRI to confirm it. Turns out I did have 3 bulging disks and inverted cervical lordosis. I got treatment from then on. If I hadn't gotten a second opinion, then I wouldn't have been aware of my almost herniated disks! Because of Dr. Mudgal's poor diagnostic, I spent several months in pain, and worsening my condition because I never suspected the source of my hand pain could be my neck. As an Orthopedics specialist, Dr. Mudgal SHOULD be able to assess that! He seems to make very binary decisions, i.e. "does this person need hand surgery [y/n], if not,… then the patient is not my problem" He won't look at the whole picture, and will not care about your health concern/issue.

Dr Mudgal was professional, accurate, and a brilliant surgeon. I got appointments immediately after I had come into the emergency room at MGH. He was careful diagnosing my fractures and planning their repair, as well as personally directing perfect splinting to improve flexibility. He answered all of my questions pre- and post-surgery, and explained about my injury and the future risks associated with them. He even answered questions I emailed him about a year later, when I thought the site had been reinjured.Overall, I have very fond memories of working with Dr Mudgal and am feeling well, over 4 years post-surgery. In reference to another comment: I actually liked the fact that he could use my case to teach residents... and I learned a lot by listening to him explain to them.

worse doctor I have ever been too - laughed at the fact I was in alot of pain and when I confronted him and told him I was offended by his laughter, he never even apologized. Mass General has a great reputation and is a wonderful hospital, with the exception of this doctor to their staff. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone!
