Dr. Charles J Crane, MD

I had cataract surgery on both my eyes at the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute, South Orange, New Jersey and received outstanding care. Dr. Crane performed both surgeries and Dr. Choi provided follow-up care. Dr. Crane met with me before surgery and thoroughly explained the procedure and what improvements in my vision I might experience. He patiently answered all my questions and made me feel that I was well informed about the decisions I needed to make regarding cataract surgery. Dr. Crane and Dr. Choi epitomize the ideal physician: highly skilled, a good listener, calm, patient with a genuine interest in answering all questions. It is apparent that the healthcare professionals at Northern New Jersey Eye Institute perform their specific duties with great professionalism, expertise and care. Each member I encountered was knowledgeable, friendly, courteous and genuinely cared that my experience was a positive one. I was treated extremely well before, during and after the surgeries.… During every part of the procedures, my comfort was considered and any needs that I had were promptly met. Best of all, are the results of the surgeries. I have worn glasses for decades with my prescriptions getting stronger with each passing year. After the surgeries, I no longer need glasses to drive, for ordinary tasks or to read. I can say without a doubt that I am so glad that Dr. Crane, Dr. Choi and the wonderful staff at the Northern New Jersey Eye Institute took such excellent care of me.

Dr. Crane performed my cataract surgery. All went well and my sight is excellent now. I was particularly impressed by the staff at both the South Orange and West Caldwell locations. They were very kind, patient and professional.

Growing up all my life I had excellent vision until I hit my 50’s and developed presbyopia. Having been a person who did lots of fine crafts, having to wear reading glasses became a nuisance but I eventually adapted, in spite of the fact that I often lost my glasses or just didn’t know where I left them behind. Yet later in my 60’s I developed cataracts.  My eyes changed again and all of a sudden I got my near sight again. It was like my far sight was traded for my near sight. But that mix was a dangerous one and just got worse when I couldn’t recognize people’s faces until they were smack dab in my face. Night driving got scary because I couldn’t see pedestrians nearby. When I met Dr. Crane and explained my situation he told me this was not an unusual scenario. He then told me that cataracts surgery was a simple surgery and that there were several lenses implants that could significantly improve my vision. One of those options included the multi focal lense. He explained to me that… this technology has been great for many but was also explaining that some people sometimes still might need reading glasses. He also explained that night lights while driving my show an added halo. It also happened to be the pricier option.   .  As I im trying to make my decision I thought of the many times I had spent similar amounts of money for a two week vacation. I thought, If this technology really works I had to see it as an investment in my health. If this improves my vision, it will improve my quality of life. After much thinking and researching I chose the multi focal technology While the thought of eye surgery seemed scary at first, it also turned out to be a very simple, not scary at all procedure. You feel nothing, nor do you see anything but a bright light in front you during the procedure. It’s as simple as that. One of the best decisions I ever made in my life! While I were told that not everyone gets my results, I am thrilled to share that I no longer need glasses. I DON NOT NEED GLASSES! I can read the fine print, I can do my crafts, I can even thread a needle WITH NO GLASSES!   Thank you Dr. Crane and team. You did not mislead me . If anything you down played the potential positive outcome.  I have the vision that I had before my 50s. Like I said, BEST DECISION EVER!

Dr. Crane performed cataract surgery for my spouse about 10 years ago. The experience was uneventful and the surgical results perfect. My general ophthalmologist advised I needed cataract surgery. I chose Dr. Crane. Why shop around when you know you have the best? My pre-operative, surgical and post-operative care was smooth. No problems. His staff knew their work and were pleasant. On the day of surgery his surgical staff all knew what to do in a reassuring way. It was stress-free. Post-op I never took any pain medication.

I needed cataract surgery. The staff at NNJEI was always available and helpful. There were several steps involved in determining my suitability for surgery, and then taking measurements for the surgery, all done professionally and with an extreme degree of organization. The same with the surgery. I would recommend Dr. Crane and the NNJEI totally.

I was directed to NNJEI and Dr. Charles Crane by my eye doctor after I developed a cataract. The first exam was thorough, and the lens replacement options clearly explained. Dr. Crane was kind, empathetic, professional, and clearly loved to help people’s lives improve by seeing more clearly. Dr. Crane listened carefully and was happy to explain the process and options. While the office could get quite busy at times, I found the office staff to be very friendly and professional. They were careful and attentive to explain each step of the pre- and post-op procedures as well as the insurance/costs. I felt well-informed and cared-for throughout each surgery. The outcome was even better than I expected, and I am grateful for the team at NNJEI!

I recently was told by my eye doctor that my cataracts had gotten to the point where they needed to be removed. I had been using Northern NJ Eye Institute for my eye exams for many years and decided to use their Cataract Surgery Center. My doctor was Charles Crane. From my first appointment with Dr Crane, I felt that I was in good hands. The exam was very thorough, and we discussed the lens replacement options. I was totally prepared for the procedure and what to expect afterwards. On the day of surgery, all the assisting operating staff handled everything so professionally and efficiently. Very impressive. I was very comfortable and well taken care of. The surgery went well and was a fairly easy procedure. In summary, I would highly recommend Northern NJ Eye Institute and Dr Crane for any eye surgical procedures. And I will continue to use their office for my routine eye exams. Everyone on the staff is very helpful and friendly.

What can I say about Dr. Crane? First, he's a professional, congenial, and from what I can see, very kind to his patients. Dr. Crane explains everything to you in a manner that is understandable to a layman. I went to Dr. Crane because I started having problems with blurry vision and found I had cataracts and an astigmatism. Dr. Crane gave me my options, and, given he was recommended by a dear friend, I was automatically comfortable with moving forward with cataract surgery on both eyes. I just had my last eye surgery, and 3 days later I'm seeing clearly enough to work on my computer all day and only a small amount of blurriness when I read. FYI, I couldn't see anything clearly before surgery so this is fantastic! My only complaint is that I keep going for my glasses to push them up my nose!

I'm usually somewhat skeptical about online reviews, so I was cautiously optimistic after reading the glowing reports about Dr. Charles Crane and his staff at Northern NJ Eye Institute. Any doubts that I may have had were quickly erased when I met Dr. Crane. He has a calming and confidence-inspiring manner, along with a great sense of humor that put me immediately at ease. He and his staff clearly explained my options for cataract surgery and lens replacement, they answered my questions and concerns with empathy, and I was quite impressed with the care they took, measuring my eyes with great precision with an array of high-tech scopes, cameras and devices. I have to say that I was struck by the feeling that the staff were not only highly trained and competent, but they also seemed to be really happy to be working there, and that speaks volumes to me about the health of a medical practice. As others have commented, eye surgery can be a very frightening thing, but my nerves were… soothed by the welcoming staff from the minute I walked in. I was ushered in promptly at the appointed time, and everyone was ready for me. The procedure felt like it took only minutes: I had no pain, no anxiety, and before I knew it, it was over and I returned home. That was only two days ago, but I've had no pain or irritation since, and my vision is on its way to being better than ever. One thing I noticed immediately was how brilliant and natural colors are now appearing. As Dr. Crane informed me, lenses with cataracts are yellow, so I had actually been seeing the world as if I were wearing yellow sunglasses, but not any more! I can't wait to get my other eye done in about a month, and I'll be seeing in Technicolor and 3-D! And yes, as others have mentioned, I left my post-op follow-up visit with parting gifts to bring home. What a bonus! I just can't say enough about my experience with Dr. Crane and the wonderful people at NNJEI.
