Dr. Charles Downey, MD

An exceptional OB. Great for vbacs. He is relaxed, practices evidence based care, and is funny too.

First of all, he had been my obgyn for several years. The last time I went to him, I was in pain and had an infection. He did not do a thorough exam and did not run any tests. He told me that I did not have an infection. So I went on to a different obgyn at that point to get a second opinion. The second opinion doctor did a complete exam and ran some tests. I actually tested positive for 3 infections and the second opinion doctor gave me 4 prescriptions which totally took care of the problem. I will no longer be going to Dr D as this is the second time that something similar to this has happened to me when I went to him. Also there was never any effort put forth by Dr D to get to know my medical history and I was not comfortable medically in his care.

Terrible doctor. The staff was nice and accommodating, but Dr. Downey is terrible. I went in because of severe pelvic pain. I am having a hard time functioning. He had two tests done, didn’t even look at the images, and told me there’s nothing wrong. In his words, “sometimes they do exploratory surgery and find nothing but it makes the patient feel better.” Like I’m making this up. I’m terrified of needles and tests, and I’m begging for them because my pain is so bad. When I asked questions about more tests or other things it could be, he shrugged me off, and told me I should go to pain management. I said I didn’t want to treat the symptoms. I wanted to fix the problem. Again shrugged me off. I’m going to a REAL doctor now who is looking into other causes of my pain. You know, someone who listens to their patient and doesn’t just ship them off to get pills when they don’t want to bother with helping them.

First, I told him about the GI issues and severe pain I had been having prior to my pregnancy, he would not tell me whether or not he would treat it, and changed the subject every time I mentioned it or asked. I told him that I did not want an ultrasound unless necessary, which I think is pretty reasonable. Although he appeared to respect my wishes (though he thought they were completely baseless), he gave me a doppler ultrasound (a small machine used with the ultrasound gel) to hear the babies heartbeat instead of using a stethoscope. There are many studies suggesting a risk between ultrasound and both miscarriage and premature birth. While the risk varies between studies, it does appear quite consistent that there is a risk. I will be switching to a provider who will not perform procedures on me without my consent, and in the future I will be certain to have my husband or someone at all future appointments to ensure that things like this do not happen again.

Staff was very nice but my surgery with Dr.. I was not happy!! Removed my ovaries and tubes but my bleeding continues after 3 wks I went back all he could tell me that hopefull it will Stop! After 2 months bleeding continued. I Found another Dr. and had to have a hysterectomy!! Very Nice Dr. But I wouldn't recommend himð???

Dr Downey and his staff are very nice ready to answer any questions for you And returning calls they are so prompt.

I was previously diagnosed with endometriosis and adenomyiosis, had 2 children (one c-section, one VBAC), and was over 30 years old when I moved to Texas and was looking for a good OB/GYN. I happened across Dr. Downey's info and a few weeks later discovered I was pregnant with my third child. I went to see Dr. Downey to find out if he would be a good fit for my husband and I. He answered all of my questions, asked great questions about my medical history, was very personable, and never once seemed in a hurry to get on to his next patient. He has always been very truthful with me about my conditions as well as my options. He is not arrogant as a lot of doctors seem to be and I think people take this as incompetent or indifferent. He is, in fact, very capable and allows the patient to be the once that makes the final decision about her care. He prefers to take the least invasive route no matter what the issue. He just recently performed my hysterectomy, leaving one ovary ( the other was… not savable) so as not to have to put me on hormone therapy. This was after over a year of discussions of options. Dr. Downey's staff has grown over the past 8 years which shows you how satisfied his patients are. When we love our doctors we tell everybody! The ladies in his office are friendly and, at least with me, take the time to have actual conversations with me instead of just taking my co-pay and my vitals and sticking me in a room. I rarely wait very long after my scheduled appointment time. A few times Dr. Downey has been called to deliver a baby but that's his job and expected as an OB/GYN. The times he was called out to deliver a baby just before my appointment, a team member has called me to either reschedule or, once he added other physicians, reschedule me with one of them IF it was okay with me. Most times, I choose to wait and see him on another day because that is how much trust I have in Dr. Downey. I've spent years building a relationship with him and enjoy working with him as my doctor.

I simply adore Dr. Downey! In the 3 years that I've been a patient, he has addressed every medical and/or hormonal issue that I've ever had. From the time you walk in his office until the time you leave, he and his staff are very gracious, caring and polite. That in itself speaks monumental to me -so much that I've since referred three girlfriends of mine to him. They also adore the man!! Best bedside manner that a doctor could ever have!!

Your mileage may vary, this is a recount of our experiences with this doctor.We used Chuck for a pregnancy/birth.This doctor has poor bedside manner, seems uneasy or uncomfortable in the room and does not review charts prior to visits (everything is news to him, each visit, regardless of how many times it was said before).Expect to be given a schedule you are expected to adhere to but the doctor will not, they request that you arrive 15 minutes early for your visit, but don't see you until >30 minutes after your scheduled time.Chuck does not review his upcoming workload and is oblivious to his office schedule.During delivery, our experience is that Chuck will stand back and allow the hospital nurses to deliver your baby without asking for your comfort or permission in allowing it.Post Partum: Don't expect the extra mile, or even the expected mile to be achieved. He instantly disassociated himself and "jumped ship" as soon as possible following the birth (Weekend birth).Recap: We relate… this guy to a Walmart cashier, you're not going to get anything above or beyond what you'd expect, and you'll be lucky to get that.What he doesn't do:Multiple ultrasounds, follow ups, review charts prior to entering the room, write anything down to remind himself, show up on time to appointments, deliver babies, dress appropriately (holes in your socks? Really?)This pregnancy was standard without complications. Maybe highly complicated pregnancies would perk his interest, or maybe this is par for the course.His staff is friendly and seem to enjoy their jobs.The doctor is friendly, but don't expect empathy or honesty.

I had been told to go to Dr. Downey's office by a few of my girlfriends that had been seeing him for years. I was a bit hesitant in seeing a male Gyn as I had never done so in the past. I was happily surprised to meet their female Pysician Assistant-Allison who seemed so personable and sweet. I have scheduled an appointment for my 17 y/o daughter and will update on how that goes. Regardless, I am not one to write a review unless I am really irritated or received extremely rude service. The service at this facility was so beyond my expectations that I realized I needed to let others know about such a terrific place. The staff all seemed as though they loved their job and were equally as kind, friendly, and upbeat. I just can't say enough about Dr. Downey and the quality of care I received!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great job!!!!!
