Dr. Colin Allan Scher, MD

I just don't understand all of the negative reviews here. We have been going to Dr. Scher for a couple of years for my son's severe eye allergies. Unlike other doctors, who just threw the steroids at him, Dr. Scher has really worked to take care of my son's eyes while trying to avoid the steroids at all costs. He answers my emails instantly and is always there ready to help. As far as personality, I don't know what people expect - he doesn't need to be your best friend; he's a doctor! With that said, he is always very kind to me and to my son, and answers all of my questions. I definitely recommend him!

Dr. Scher is not only rude and arrogant, he misdiagnosed my son's Congenital Glaucoma for over a year.... allowing my son's optic nerve to continue to become more and more damaged. Now, he is legally blind in his left eye with poor vision in his right. His pressures were over 50 when he was finally diagnosed (which was caught by his assistant, NOT HIM). At pressures this high my son could have been blind within three years. He is the worst excuse for an ophthalmologist as even his colleagues have expressed they have no idea why he wasn't able to properly diagnose my son when he has ALL of the typical symptoms and signs of having the disorder. Steer clear from this "doctor"

We took our 4 year old son to this doctor and it was by far the worst experience we ever had with any medical provider! Rude, arrogant, and unprofessional! Treated both our son and us in an unacceptable way and had zero interpersonal skills! Can’t believe he wants to work with kids when he obviously lacks compassion and kindness. He should really quit his job....

This is my first review online for a Dr, first because I don't particularly value anonymous reviews- the whole process can be manipulated and too often consumers are ill informed, or have their own issues- its understandable that parents are upset, and sometimes well informed or not, they project those onto others. Our own experience has been exceptional with Dr Scher. He is highly regarded by other Drs, and its clear from the detailed questions I asked, that he cares, and knows what he is talking about. He can be a bit brusque "seeming" because I think of his accent, and busy practice. The only downside is dealing with his office staff, who like many doctors offices, get busy and have to deal with cranky parents, and they can have a bad day. Also, Childrens Hospital, like all providers under the last couple years of the mess that is ObamaCare, are changing and its been difficult at times, for their right hand to know what the left is doing- a common problem in large… institutions. We wait for appointments and keep them, to be sure we get the best Dr we can. I see he serves a lot of Medicare patients, too- and that can be a problem, in terms of efficiency and accuracy and understanding, of basic things, from the patient perspective.

We love Dr Scher at Children's hospital! The picture on this site is not him though! Our son has been going to him since he was a baby. He is 16 now. Always gave the right diagnisis. Highly recommend him!

Having an eye disorder is hard I am now 19 years old & I've had thee worst childhood because of it. When people go to the doctor it is to ask questions & get opinions on what's best for them he just completely shut me down & did not care at all ! He may be a great surgeon but he needs to work on his people skills BIGTIME !

This man fixed my childs vision when she was very young. She is now 14 and has PERFECT vision! I am so grateful for him. I would recommend him to anyone!

Dr Scher should be working in a research lab, away from human patients, and not in a practice dedicated to ill children and concerned parents. Overtly narcissistic is an understatement when describing his style - he is above answering questions! The entire practice hurts when one doctor behaves like that; we are moving to another location altogether!

I'm not sure why people are rating him so low on this website. We've seen him twice now. The first time our 6 day old daughter had an eye infection and was admitted to Rady's. The other eye doctors wanted to perform surgery on her under general anesthesia right away. We were very uncomfortable with that. Dr Scher said to wait and do a more conservative approach of massage and medication. Which worked great.The second time we saw him, this last week, my daughters other eye got infected and we were admitted to Rady's again. Again the other doctors wanted to probe her eye right away under general anesthesia. Again Dr. Scher said it wasn't necessary and we could take a more conservative approach. Which worked well.I thought his bedside manner was great. We had lots of questions and had done our homework on blocked tear ducts and methods of treatment. He also said if it happened again to call him right away for treatment.He put us at ease and made us feel good about our decision… to not have surgery right away and instead take a conservative approach. I would recommend him to anyone and the two resident doctors at Rady's both told us they would want him treating their kids.

I agree his bedside manner is horrible, I really do not think he should be working with children and especially babies. I told my husband a few times I will not return and I keep going only because he is affiliated with my childs doctors office and I do not think they would refer us to anyone else, but this makes me think if I should just change everything just so I can get a better eye doctor for my daughter. Now I know it wasnt all in my head. My daughter has been going to him since she was a newborn and shes two now and he has never known how to treat her, and even got mad a few times when she wouldnt open her eyes so he could take a look. I mean come on shes a baby. I think Im done with him and anyone else who has been referred to him, dont even waste your time, he says the same thing every time we go in and its nothing new or anything useful. Everyone has been telling me to get a 2nd opinion after two years I finally agree and Im going to make the much much needed change.
