Dr. Dana D. Portenier, MD

Please consider Dana his is a great SURGEON ,not because he done mines because he over all does a great job he answer questions puts his input don't bite his tongue for nothing over all he is the best I am over pleased with my results.

Dr. Portenier is great. This is my 2nd surgery with him. About 18 mos ago he removed a slipped Lap Band that I had for 8 years. It took over a year for my insurance to approve my reflux surgery because there was no change in it after the band was removed. My surgery was last month & I was only in the hospital overnight which really surprised me. No problems after I came home I am on solid foods now except for pork or steak. Some people have complained about appointments. What most of them don't know is that scheduling calls are NOT done in the office. They are done in a scheduling hub. I am a Duke employee & work in another dept with a scheduling hub & we get over 2000 calls a day for over 25 + offices. If you have any questions send them through My Chart and you will get an answer. Some people complain about the nurses not calling back. The nurses get a lot of calls every day & they also check the My Chart messages for the providers. Depending on the reason they… have to wait for a reply from the provider to answer the patient. He is the head of the Dept so he is buzzier than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Dr. Portenier has a wonderful bedside manner and is very thorough at answering your questions. I didn't have any problems with my surgery and was home recovering very quickly. He has very little appointment availability and his appointments fill up fast. It can be very frustrating getting an appointment. His front staff doesn't answer the phone and if you leave a message they don't call you back. I've even tried getting an appointment through Dukemychart without success. But if you are able to get through it's worth it to have Dr. Portenier as your surgeon.

After initially having surgery somewhere else...that surgery went wrong along with several attempts....Dr Dana Portenier was left to correct the issues I was left with. I can honestly say I probably would be living today if it weren't for him. I can't tell you how essential he was to my survival and recovery.

Complete jerk. Never examined me or looked at any records, spent 5 minutes with me and accused me of seeking drugs, had he bothered to look at any of the records,he would have seen I was there for a surgical opinion for a gastric obstruction nothing to do with medication....try reviewing a person's records and listening to a patient - that is what you went to school for!
