Dr. Dana Mara Thompson, MD

This review is new but the experience is 6 years ago. This is not a review on skill just personality. Do understand she sees kids with bigger issues than mine. Just needed tonsillectomy. I had asked her what the risks were with the procedure and she looked at me and said, “oh, your one of those moms.” I decided to go somewhere else. I think we are all “those moms” give me a break. Also, all over the news was a girl who had just ended up on life support because of a tonsillectomy. Who wouldn’t question it? I had sought her out because I wanted a higher level of skill. I do research things and look for the best. Turns out she wouldn’t have done the surgery only would have stood next to students doing it. I am sure an excellent surgeon but your getting judged.

The only doctor on the whole world for airway unique surgery .. the only doctor to trust as ENT airway problems .. the best of the best .

Dr. Dana Thompson is a very talented doctor and also a very kind and caring person. She deeply cares about her patients and treats them with a great deal of respect.

Dr Thompson diagnosed my son at 4 months old with an airway issue. This was 12 yrs ago while she was at Mayo in Rochester Mn. She performed a corrective surgery. I knew something was wrong with him . after misdiagnosis with a few Drs and no relief for my son( he was in constant pain and misery) we found Dr Thompson. She diagnosed him immediately and set him up for corrective surgery right away. Her bedside manner is impeccable, she genuinely cares for " her kids" she instantly connects with parents and patients. When we first met Dr Thompson, we were told she is the best in the country. I couldn't agree more.

I was a patient of Dr. Thompson starting in 2000 at Mayo Clinic. She was very concerned about my airway and I got a Trach. before she even did anything else to help me. She was kind and caring and ended up being a friend as well as my Dr. My journey with lasted 14 years and over 45 airway dial dilatations. I even followed her to Cincinnati, she is that good. In 2002 she did a airway reconstruction, that was a very rough time and she was so awesome. She really cared about me AND my husband during this Journey. I am her oldest patient because I was 48 when I started with her. I would follow her anywhere to be treated. I was heartbroken when she went to Chicago and her patients were just children. I miss her terribly and would go to her in a heartbeat should she accept me as a patient again.

Dr. Dana Thompson was amazing! She performed the surgery herself, per our wishes. She is very kind, compassionate, and extremely understanding. She met with us before the surgery to reiterate the procedure and again after the surgery ( in a private room) to let us know how everything went, as well as what to expect over the course of Morgan's recovery. What a great addition to the team of Doctors at Children's in Chicago. I am not a Doctor so I have no idea what they go through on a daily bases. I can only imagine the stress that they are under treating our children. If a bad attitude comes from a great surgeon I will take it. On a side note from the person who had a problem with Dr. Thompson's attitude, if attitude is what you are wanting just wait... The AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE ACT DOES NOT INCLUDE ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENTS, in fact, you may not even have a choice or opinion in the future. Just be glad you have insurance and live in a country that has the best healthcare in the… world. At least for now.

Here is my advise to all parents who will be taking their children to Lurie Children Hospital of Chicago to see Dr. Dana Thompson - STAY AWAY and find a better doctor. This is by far the worst experience in this hospital and the worst experience with any doctors ever in my life. Dr. Thompson is very ignorant, rude and unprofessional. I'm in an absolute shock how someone like this can work in this "great hospital" and on a top of everything can be a head of any department. There are a lot of way better doctors in Chicago, so you don't have to wait for her to make an appearance for 2 hours (yes, this is how late she is for her appointments), and than shows you an attitude or just decides that she will go to see another patient and let you wait another hour. Absolute joke! This doctor should be fired from Lurie's Hospital immediately. I spent 5 hours in this hospital for a simple hearing evaluation, which takes 10 minutes (no one even offered 1 cup of water of crackers for a child). … Shame on Lurie Children Hospital - there are 1000's of better doctors. Why hire such an horrible and lazy person who can't even show any affection to 2 year old child, who has been waiting in a hospital for 5 hours and 2+ hours in a tiny room waiting for Dr. Dana Thompson who will decide to take another patients (instead of you), who just arrived for the same exact tests and didn't wait at all. Never in my life I met such an ignorant doctor!

We went to Mayo Clinic after being told by the ENT we were seeing he couldn't do anything more for our son. Dr. Thompson examined our son and told us she would be able to help. Our son was born a twin and 14 weeks early. He spent the first 6 months of his life intubated and then received a tracheostomy when he was 6 mo. old. He was on a vent till he was two. He was unable to have his trach removed after being weened from the vent due to airway issues. He received an airway reconstruction when he was two and it was unsuccessful and we were told nothing more could be done for him. Then we met Dr. Thompson and she took us on a path that led us to our son's trach being successfully removed. She immediately discovered underlying issues and preceeded to solve them. It has been a long process but she has been wonderful through the whole thing. She relates to the parents and it is obvious she cares about her patients and their family's needs. We even followed her back to Cincinnati… when she returned there for a time. I thank God every day that we made the trip to Mayo and that we were lucky enough to meet Dr. Dana. Our son's care is on going. But thanks to Dr. Thompson I know his care is in the best hands possible.

She is leaving Cincinnati to go back to Mayo Clinic...what a loss for Cincinnati Children's Hospital. If you ever need a caring physician who is bright , smart, a great surgeon and cares about you and your kid, she is the ONE!
