Dr. David Waiho Chui, MD

I recently had a colonoscopy done by Dr. Chui. He is a very friendly, warm and caring person. As the patient of first time for colonoscopy, I was nervous, but Dr. Chui and the nurses in the surgery room were very nice. They made me feel very comfortable before the procedure. They explained detail of the procedure and make the prep work very easy.

I haven't had a chance to see Dr. Chui yet, but my experience with his lady staff was already in the very uncomfortable zone. My husband had a referral to see Dr. Chui, and I am the one who contacted Dr. Chui's office to schedule the appointment. I called the office and was talking with the lady at the front office, who has asked a great deal of questions - which, in fact, should be asked by the professional doctor. Later, she said she had to talk with Dr. Chui before arranging the schedule. She said she would call me back in two days. By the end of the day 2, I haven't received any call from his office, so I decided to call them as a follow up. The same lady, who I don't want to mention the name, told me that she hasn't gotten anything back from Dr. Chui, so I have to wait until they feel like to, I supposed, schedule the appointment for my husband. The staff was indifferent, unfriendly, cold, and unprofessional. After I have read review about this doctor and his staff, I feel… blessed that I didn't have a chance to see him. It was a bad experience way from the front office, so I could assume what I should expect from the doctor. Not so good experience, probably.

Patient BE VERY CAREFUL if you chose this Doctor !!! My husband had life threatening condition back in Jan. 2010, which his stomach has paralyzed due to unknown reason. His weight was dropped from 185 to 145 within 3 weeks of time, he deteriorated very quickly due to the fact he cannot eat at all. Dr. Chui was the specialist we chose at that time, and after the endoscopy , he saw undigested food in my husband stomach after more than 16 hours of fasting. He was not able to diagnose him with anything, or even seems concerned with what he saw, he insisted to schedule a colonoscopy in 5 days, unfortunately, we end up canceled it before the colonoscopy taken place as my husband got into very dangerous & critical condition, and checked into emergency at Stanford hospital, later diagnosed with life threatening condition called : Gastroparisis, which took him a full year to recover. Dr. Chui has failed to diagnose him and delayed his treatment. However, this simply shows his professional… skill is lacking, and many doctor can fail diagnose on patient, which is not the real problem we have with this doctor. In fact, we have never complaint about it . This year, when we called his office to schedule a routine colonoscopy exam, we were told by his office staff that : Dr. Chui refuse to see my husband as patient, because we have canceled the colonoscopy two years ago and went to Stanford hospital instead ! ( Yeah, sure, if we did not, my husband would have died at his care ! ) I do not know what professional conscience & ethic or principles Dr. Chui is following to come up with judgment & decision as such , but we are certainly feel VERY BLESSED that he refuse to see us and allow us to experience his professional ethic, so our best interest is not going to be compromised again. It will be a true misfortune to be under his care knowing how big of ego he bares for himself, and how little he care about his patient !

I was referred to Dr Chui for colonoscopy. The reason was abnormal finding on CT Scan in the area of ascending colon. Right before colonoscopy I humbly asked dr Chui if he could pay attention to the side of the colon which appeared abnormal. He said yes he KNOWS that abnormal was LEFT side (Descending colon). In FACT abnormal was opposite side! Not trying to put dr Chui in an uncomfortable position, at the same time understanding how important for doctor to know the correct side before the procedure, I politely tried to explain. That was a big mistake! Dr Chui has suddenly became very agitated screaming not to teach him procedure which he is doing for 20 years (?!) Later more, even though the biopsy came ABNORMAL, dr Chui initially refused to make appointment for me saying that I will get his letter with recommendations instead. Since it was very important to have a follow up, in the end I was given one - in 2 months! Finally on the appointment day, calling in to verify it since the… time of the day - 6PM - looks too late for a regular appointment. Office staff puts me on Hold three times for 10-20 mins each then hang up. Rude? Nevertheless, together with my wife we arrive on time. Doctor Chui starting by telling me that he has only 5 minutes to talk since he has to leave! He behaves hostile and says since he already sent me a letter he doesn't feel he needs to answer any more questions or do any reasonable explanations on the abnormal results of procedure. When I pointed out that colonoscopy is very expensive procedure and patient has rights at least to have a quality care afterwords, dr Chui said that procedure was paid by my insurance not me (?!) Doesn't this look like insurance fraud ??For the rest, he suddenly calls in two of stuff workers who stayed in the exam room while we tried to discuss private issues(!), which is a shock and direct violation to the patient privacy and confidentiality! It seemed to be a usual practice for dr Chui with patients perhaps. Even though Dr Chui agreed it was likely necessary to have a surgery, he has refused to refer me to any particular doctor (as he promised at my first appointment), instead leaving this up to me to find one by my own!His office staff was rude, with receptionist even refused to disclose her name. For the medical record release, they asked $35 for about 10 pages.Both me and wife are shocked by incompetence and openly offending behavior by dr Chui and his office staff. Complete disaster!! :(
