Dr. David Armando Fernandez, MD

Initial impressions were all absolutely wonderful. Doctor performed a discectomy and told me I'd recover quickly. When my pain got worse- so bad that I screamed every morning when my husband helped me out of bed- I informed the doctor. Doctor Fernandez palpated a mushy swelling I had over the surgical site, had me perform a couple of movements to check for reherniation, gave me a prescription for an nsaid and told me to make a follow-up appointment. At the second appointment, I was given a prescription for physical therapy at an OrthoMichigan owned PT. Completed PT, but I was still in considerable pain, although no longer screaming every morning when I got out of bed. Third follow-up appointment despite being told I was still in as much pain as I had been before surgery, Doctor Fernandez told me that I was fully recovered and should return prn. I just needed to build some core strength. I was in so much pain that I was not functional - for example, standing up long enough to make… dinner left me in so much pain I couldn't eat it. Via a call to his MA and patient portal messages, I (politely) expressed how much pain I was in and nearly begged for help. Via his MA, he refused to order an MRI as one was not called for or to do any further follow-up. I was told to get a second opinion and when an MRI another doctor had ordered came back with a finding of infection in the disc and vertebra the discectomy had been performed on and my primary care provider was telling me that I needed to be hospitalized, I was told to follow-up with whatever neurosurgeon saw in the hospital. Dr. Fernandez was WONDERFUL right up until I experienced problems. Had I written this review immediately after surgery, I would have given him 5 stars- 10 if I could have. None of my doctors could believe that he had refused to even order an MRI. I required a six day stay in the hospital, a painful bone biopsy, and another 6 weeks of IV antibiotics at home. My pain was down by 75% by day 3 of treatment. Follow-up scans indicate that despite the treatment, the infection has spread. I may need another 12+ weeks of IV antibiotic therapy. I now have permanent spinal deformities and have significant pain in more of my back than before surgery. I have to imagine that things would be better if the infection had been caught earlier. I still find the difference between Dr. Fernandez before surgical complications and after surgical complications shocking. He expressed zero compassion and no professionalism. I have never been anything but polite with Doctor and his staff so I don't understand why Doctor became so cold towards me.

I am so lucky to have such a skilled surgeon with such a great staff. I have recovered my independence which was a big worry to me. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Fernandez.

I’d give him 10 stars if I was able to. He is professional, patient, personable, informative and kind. He answered all my questions and gave me new knowledge to help with my back issues. A dynamic human being and exceptional physician!!

Dr. Fernandez is a phenomenal surgeon, I am so grateful he was assigned to my emergency surgery. My procedure went well and my recovery is progressing as expected.

Dr Fernandez is a Great Doctor. You may experience a wait for your visits but trust me after you experience how knowledgeable, kind and Great surgeon he is the wait time is all worth it. If you're looking for a experienced and trustworthy Doctor, He's the one!

Dr Fernandez is phenomenal! The first appointment/consukt went very well! He is warm and thorough and surgery was today and it went just as he said it would! No surprises! Highly recommend!

I know how much time he spends with me explaining what is going to happen and what to expect so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that he runs late for appointments.

I had a great experience with Dr. Fernandez! He is an Orthopedic Surgeon so you should expect a bit of a wait before your first appointment as is normal with any specialist. My first appointment started with a bunch of x-rays followed by a physical exam from Dr. Fernandez and then a thorough review of the x-rays, I was surprised how much time he spent which was a welcome surprise. He then sent me out for additional testing and I am happy with how things are progressing with my recovery.
