Dr. David Bruce Granet, MD

We have yet to have our surgery with Dr Granet but based on his staff and our first experience, I am not sure how this office gets any good reviews. First, the doctor was 2.5 hours behind for our appointment, when I asked about this, his staff said “Yup. That sounds about right for him” and no apologies. We finally were seen, referred to get an MRI and the staff or doctor sends us to the wrong place where they only scan adults, not children, another waste of time and during rush hour traffic no less. Here we are two months later and numerous phone calls later and the staff at this doctor’s office still can’t send in the appropriate paperwork or return a phone message until at least two later.. OMG. So disrespectful of our time and efforts.

Dr Granet is always attentive and shows great concern for my daughter. She has been seeing him for 9 years and yes at time the wait has been very long but he has always be apologetic. My daughter has an eye condition that left untreated can cause lose of vision. He makes her top priority when she needs a last minute appointment always fitting her in, never disregarding her even when we are unsure if she is having a real flare up.

Dr. Granet is the best! He has significantly improved my vision in a million different ways which has been life changing! He is very thorough with all of his patients, and spends the time completely answering all of my questions. People come from all over the world to see him, and for good reason. He knows exactly what he is doing. He understand the eye and how it moves extremely well. He is extremely devoted to is work and wants the best possible outcome for each of his patients.

My wife was diagnosed with thyroid eye disease (TED), which damages eye muscles and pulls the eyes out of alignment causing double vision and fatty deposits around the eyes. In a major west coast city, my wife had strabismus (eye muscle) surgery to correct the misalignment. This was only marginally successful. Her double vision remained. Her eye surgeon prescribed prisms and felt that nothing more needed to be done. His assistant even recommended we get a second opinion. Looking online, we easily found the Shiley Eye Institute (in San Diego) and Dr. Kikkawa's and Dr Granet's YouTube seminar videos. Both doctors clearly explained TED and the damage it does to eye muscles and their treatment approaches. They also made a big point of the emotional effect of the eye misalignment on their patient's lives. TED restricts the movement of the eyeballs. So, Dr. Kikkawa first performs orbital (eye socket) decompression which allows the eye to move as freely as possible. This allows… Dr. Granet's eye muscle surgery to be more effective in aligning the eyes. Both doctors have amazing reputations, and yet are not at all pretentious. MDs from all over the world come to Shiley to train under them. Dr. Kikkawa and Dr. Granet and their staffs are amazingly compassionate, caring and responsive. My wife and I felt like members of their "family". My wife ended up having several surgeries from Dr. Kikkawa and Dr. Granet. Her eye alignment, acuity and appearance have now been nearly restored as they were pre-TED. This journey seems like a miracle to us, considering the skill, precision and "art" needed to accomplish the restoration. My wife and I are extremely fortunate to have found Shiley, Dr. Kikkawa and Dr. Granet (and the associated Ratner Eye Center). We highly recommend Dr. Kikkawa and Dr. Granet for what we believe to be is the best TED care available.

He's a very good guy - and a great surgeon. I never figured that the severe double vision I'd had for 60+ years would have been correctable and was fine with the idea of wearing glasses with prisms, since my vision was so poor. That's all I'd ever known. After cataract surgery, though, my vision was - *poof* - 20/15, and the only reason I still needed glasses was because of the prisms. My ophthalmologist suggested I look into strabismus surgery (which I'd never heard of), and gave me a couple of names. Dr. Granet clearly had the best credentials, and after a preliminary visit with him and the team at Shiley, it was clear that he was the right choice. Even though he took a few good-natured jabs at my Patriots and Red Sox, he put me at ease with the idea of cutting my eye muscles and reattaching them (not an easy leap to take at my age; I've grown rather fond of them), and with the fact that this would be a fairly uncomplicated procedure with a very high success rate. I can't speak… authoritatively to how easy or difficult eye microsurgery is, but I can guess .And he did a great job. After a few hours (only 30 minutes in surgery), I walked out with perfect vision. My eyes were sore for a few days, but it wasn't particularly painful. It was simply life-changing. I know the amazing work he does with young children is *much* more valuable than fixing an old guy's double vision, but I can't say enough about his manner, knowledge and work. You may have a long wait to see him, but it's more than worth it.

When our third and youngest daughter, Zoe, was a few months old, her eyes started to flutter, nonstop, back and forth. We thought this was unusual and began to inquire. She was quickly diagnosed with some form of nystagmus. Thankfully, the most concerning causes, like brain tumor, were ruled out early. However, there still were lots of questions, ideas, and information to consider. It was confusing and scary. We weren't sure which path would be best for her. Several doctors offered considered, but divergent courses of action, or in some cases, hopeful non-action. Making the right moves seemed time sensitive and critical, but which way to choose was very unclear. Addressing nystagmus wasn't well known science like stitching a wound or setting a broken bone. At about 10 months old, we'd traveled around our home state and visited another city across the country in search of the best doctor and a plan for Zoe. We took another trip from our hometown, Denver, Colorado, to La Jolla so she… could visit David Granet. That trip was transformative. From the beginning, we knew he was different. On one hand, his expertise, experience, and intellect were clear. However, he would probably roll his eyes at that comment because what makes him so special is who he is… and he doesn't seem impressed with his status or intellect. He's not just deeply kind and caring, or earthy and folksy. He's deeply human… and relates. His approach transcends sterile concepts like “bedside manner”. It's more of a family approach… he's become a member of ours. Dr. Granet’s ability to manage complex medical investigation and intervention while also talking like a regular person has been deeply helpful. Spending time without watching the clock, accommodating out of town distant relations, and advising through conversation based on our values and needs makes him special. Caring like we're members of his family has been a gift. Like a marvel comic vigilante, he walks with us and among us, but has helped us through a scary episode with calm, concern, interest, and frankly bravery that we have not found to be common. There are too many examples to share, but our favorite was what we saw before her third and last surgery. While other doctors have met with us prior to the staff taking our children back to a surgical procedure, he took Zoe back to pre-op himself. We have a few photos of them playing as they walked down the hall to her operation. She felt no fear, had no idea about the depth of his surgical precision, and was too young to understand the level of preparation he'd put into her case. The seriousness of and precision required for that surgery never showed in his face. Never mind that the complex procedure was a major success. He took care of her like a fabled old physician practicing in times long gone by; before insurance companies and defensive medicine. He healed more than her eyes and it rippled though our whole family.

Surgery was scheduled within the month;success is 100%. At a week post recovery, my life is back to normal.

Amazing physician and team. I had adult (repeat) strabismus surgery. Very successful and amazing results! Dr. Granet and team have experience with thyroid eye disease and adjustable suture surgery as well. Thankfully these did not apply in my case, but this gave me extra confidence because my history of thyroid problems and previous childhood strabismus surgeries. Many kudos for fixing my extreme exotropia and helping my balance, driving, as well as social interaction!

World class expert yet kind and caring. When u needed more time he gave me it so I never worry if he's delayed helping another family. The best of the best. My eyes are straight after I was told elsewhere nothing could be done. His team is awesome and I love that he's so good others want to learn from him. Go here of u need help or if your child does. You will sleep better!

Dr granet is the best! Our daughter has Nystagmus and he performed surgery on her when she was 2 year old. She is now 4 and the outcome has been amazing! He is so encouraging, caring, knowledgeable, kind and overall amazing. He takes his time with his patients, so be prepared for some wait time but it is worth it! Lots of families travel from distance to see him so he really makes sure to take the time with his families.
