Dr. David I Kabel, DO

Please read all of this if you are thinking about seeing Dr. Kabel. It’s important if you are paying cash - you want to see certain treatment. You have a right to Know before you go. And that is why you’re reading this—because you’re thinking about going outside the insurance system and so You’re reading reviews like I did. The good: Dr. Kabel is great at medication management and at finding the right medication for you. The bad: Dr. Kabel seems to only care about money. What’s wrong with a physician that cares about money? - nothing at all. They went to tons of school, but alongside money should be respect for the patient and caring (even if it has to be faked). He will start a 30 minute session 4-5 minutes late and try to wrap it up a couple minutes early. But at his cash pay rate, as he doesn’t take insurance, this can be $5 a minute of lost time. I mean scheduling another visit should be after he has completed the current one - not during it. He charges you the… full rate for a missed appointment , which I suppose would be fine. But, he charges before the appointment to ensure he collects payment. Again, fine, doesn’t tell you ahead of time but ok. However, my last appointment was a telephone one, he charged me for, I had the phone on silent and missed his call - my fault. But, knowing I was manic, shouldn’t a caring Dr have left a message, texted me or emailed me? I mean he got my $145 for a half hour visit regardless. But I’m in his care, I’m manic, he should have given me a chance to call back or at least emailed to check in and see if I had a question or to see if I was ok. The bedside manner is terrible, one time he had to call my house and my wife answered and asked does he always talk in that “I’m a professor Giving a lecture” superior tone. I told her they he does, because he is a Dr who seems to think he’s superior to his patients. When I broke down in his office once, there was no shown sympathy. He only gives one refill at a time, to ensure you’ll come back sooner, rather than to make sure you have the medicine you need (never been to a psychiatrist that gives 1 refill). Also, regarding respect for patients, I seemed to annoy him with my questions once about medicine and he let me know that he was annoyed. It’s my time I’m paying for and my right to ask questions and clarification. Another time, I went to pick up a medication at his office that he had taped to the door - but the elevators stop working without a key at a certain time. He didn’t tell me this though I told him when I would be arriving. He walks out and basically tells me I can go in and I might get lucky. Shouldn’t he have walked ten steps and swiped the card himself? No he wouldn’t do that, because he’s all about the money and not about the patients, it’s fine to be about both. But, I don’t know if he realizes the contempt shown to patients and the money oriented attitude. Charge the money, fine, it care about the patients or fake they you do. Too bad because he would be good otherwise.

Plain and simple, I would recommend Dr. Kabel to anyone I cared about who needs the therapy.

My teen was suffering from anxiety and depression so I took him to Dr. Kabel. After a very short appointment, Dr. Kabel prescribed a very strong and addictive anxiety drug. Two weeks later my child attempted suicide by overdosing on this medication. We called Dr. Kabel immediately after taking our child to the ER and left a message with his service. It took the doctor one week to get back to us. If he couldn't make time for his patient who just attempted suicide, I don't think he should be a psychiatrist. Since then, every doctor we have spoken to, has voiced their concern over his handling of my child - especially the drug he prescribed. Every one has said it was the worst possible prescription choice and they would never have prescribed it to a child. They were speechless when we told them how long it took for Dr. Kabel to get back to us when we were all in crisis. Very disappointing.

Dr Kabel is a wonderful kind man. He has been my daughter's psychiatrist for the last year. While her bipolar disorder is not stable yet he has been supportive of me and our struggles. He is willing to listen and takes time to teach. I am able to communicate through his email, which helps as she is considered an adult and may not always tell him what is really going on. A breath of fresh air from the usual psychiatrists who only spend enough time to write a new perscription and pat me on the back. Worth paying out of pocket.

I first contacted Dr. Kabel based on a recommendation by my primary care doc. He accommodated my unusual schedule and I have been his patient for over eight months. He is easy to talk to, explains all his diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations and has earned my trust. Being that I am another healthcare professional, that is not easy. Made a lot of progress in a short amount of time.

Dr.Kabel is caring and responsive. He has never failed to call back, takes time to LISTEN, makes significant suggestions, and has never let me down. He does everything in his power to help me. I would recommend him to any of my friends.
