Summary

David Kaufman, DO, is a longtime Spartan, professor and Assistant Vice President for Clinical Affairs with the Office of Health Sciences at MSU. He has served as a practicing neuro-ophthalmologist at Michigan State University for over three decades, helping train 70 fellows in neuro-ophthalmology and earning more than 25 MSU teaching awards. During the fall, you can find him on the sidelines as a neurologist for MSU Football.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kaufman’s research and clinical interests have included using the afferent visual system and electrophysiology to assess prognosis and early therapeutic strategies for brain disease such as multiple sclerosis and stroke. He has been cited in “Best Doctors” in neurology multiple times, secured 18 years of sustained NIH funding, and participated on the executive committee of multiple clinical trials.
In addition, Dr. Kaufman has more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and abstracts focused on neuro-ophthalmology including several publications on mild traumatic brain injury. More recently he has focused on sports concussion and the development of radiographic biomarkers to assist with prognosis (fMRI scanning).
Dr. Kaufman received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served as a resident and fellow at the University of Wisconsin.  He was a Harvard Clinical Research Fellow while obtaining his neuro-ophthalmology training at Massachusetts General Hospital. 
Among many other responsibilities, Dr. Kaufman is helping to strengthen collaboration across the health colleges and MSU Health Care. He is fostering an environment that supports the clinical, education and research goals of every practitioner. He also strives to foster the growth of the academic practice, and be the bringer of health, hope and healing to the people of Michigan.
