Dr. David A Mattingly, MD

I had Dr Mattingly replace both my knees. I feel that he is a talented surgeon. I found his behavior widely variable. At times very warm and friendly, other times not. I called him with a post op problem ( a 8cm x 8 cm hematoma that developed on post op day seven) He was dismissive, and refused to see me. I have never had a surgeon not want to see a potential surgical complication. As a result I have adhesions and pain/stiffness. When I went to see him after this for my scheduled visit ( six weeks later) I mentioned the adhesion, he didn't know what I was talking about and said " oh, I haven't looked at your chart" He's seeing a patient but doesn't look to see if there was anything unusual about the surgery? Odd behavior.

I had a very successful surgery with Dr. Mattingly and so encouraged two friends to seek his service: one for hip surgery and another for a total knee replacement. He botched both surgeries, and I feel so badly in having recommending him. Both needed follow up surgeries to rectify his errors, and both went to other doctors.

Dr Mattingly and staff at the New England Baptist were all excellent. Total knee replacement and hip replacement. Excellent recovery with both surgeries. Highly recommend.

Dr. Mattingly botched my surgery. I was closed up with a tiny blood vessel leaking in me. I had to have 9 transfusions in 10- days. The blood hardened and damaged my sciatic never permanently. I was in rehab with horrible pain for 3 months. He refused to take responsibility for his error blaming the problem on my spinal stenosis. The EMG disagreed with his defensive stance. He is fortunate I didn't sue him; I am not that kind of person. I remain 8 years later with a permanent limp and damaged thigh muscle. Do not subject yourself to this arrogant, insensitive, out of date surgeon. You can do much better than him.

I had both hips replaced about 4 years ago from Mattingly he used to call himself Chief Surgeon of Baptist Hospital no longer.... as Baptist told me he never was the Chief physicians basically rent the space at the hospital. As to the surgery he is brutal the length of time to heal is much longer and more painful that anyone I have talk to. After 6 weeks pre op my friend was on the dance floor I was falling over at 6 weeks. Mattingly extended my leg so much longer than the other I lost my balance even with inserts. My vertebra, hips, and organs were smashed at a lopsided angle causing excruciating pain he ignore my please for help and blew me off. I had to go to Mass General and others for help. It was terrible. This was approx 4 + years ago I am still dealing with what he did limiting what I can do no tennis etc anything jarring can't run I feel like the mechanical man. I have bulges outside of my body where he put hardware in. He uses only ONE company for 37 years one would ask… why??! Only one brand Depuy. He forces your body to adapt to the unit rather than other doctors have many mfg to select from and select which size etc would work best for YOU!!! Don't use this guy you will be very sorry. I live with this very day. This is a warning from a very bad experience. I have had many follow ups with doctors trying to get help.... after this surgery is done you basically have to live with what you have. Please choose carefully.

Old out dated doctor 2 hips done on me.... he is so out of the main stream of doing hip surgery. Trust me not what he says as it is not true. You will suffer and be disfigured from this guy.

Excellent doctor! I have scheduled knee replacement surgery with Dr. Mattingly after seeing many other orthopedic surgeons and not feeling confident. He explained everything thoroughly and also his staff was very knowledgeable and very thorough.

Dr. Mattingly set accurate expectations and he and his staff and the Baptist Hospital were all excellent.

Dr Mattingly replaced my 2 hips simultaneously 10 years ago and I'm still going strong, no problems what so ever. He's was the only Dr I could find in the Boston area that had the experience to replaced both hips at the same time. 1 surgery 1 recovery was the way to go for me. By choosing Dr Mattingly you are choosing the best.

dr mattingly is not only a wonderful surgeion, but he also is courteous, compassionate and friendly. I have been his patient a long time.
