Dr. O'Brien graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. Dr. O'Brien completed his internship and residency at the University of Cincinnati, Department of Surgery. He was the Chief Resident at the University of Cincinnati, Department of Surgery in 2003-4. Dr. O'Brien completed a clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH. He brings The Oregon Clinic - Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery (GMIS) several prestigious honors and awards. He is a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. He is a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and American Board of Surgery.

Dr.O’Brien did an experimental colon rectal surgery on my brother to try to save his colon from his cancer. After the surgery my brother had a horrible amount of pain he had to deal with for 2 1/2 years!! He called O’Brien and told him about this and they kept telling him he had to give it time. My brother saw other doctors and they couldn’t believe the damage that had been done to his colon. This surgery ended up shutting down my brothers liver and kidneys and he died at 44 years old leaving three young children!! Had this doctor listened to my brother he might still be here!!!

We liked Dr. O’Brien and his honest approach talking to my mother. He expressed his concerns about doing surgery at her advanced age.

I was referred to Dr O'Brien for a colon resection surgery. My experience with him was excellent all the way. He took as lot of time in his office to explain things and he was super attentive after the surgery.
