Crippled me. The back of the screws were sharp and jagged on xray and after pulled out. Ive been crippled since excruciating pain.

Great Doc...successful sugery!

I saw Dr Shapiro for a curvature of the spine (scoliosis) when I was 14 years old (about 12 years ago). He did not sugarcoat anything-- in fact, he was abruptly direct. I can understand why people might rate him poorly on his manner, but I personally found it refreshing. He told me that I would have to have surgery, my curvature had surpassed the point where I could correct it with bracing. His directness allowed me to trust him and his surgical methods. I saw three surgeons-- Dr. Shapiro was the winner. He answered all of my questions in a clear and concise manner. My surgery was extended because he sewed me up instead of stapling me-- Because of my young age, he did not want me to have ugly surgery scars. He did not tell anyone that he did this and it was a surprise even to Judy. She told me that he had never sewn anyone up before. My surgery was a complete success--Any problems surrounding my surgery were the fault of the hospital. In fact, both Dr. Shapiro and my attending doctor… in the hospital were livid at the treatment I received at Evanston Hospital. Long after my surgery, I saw him to request that I borrow my x-rays and files for a school project on scoliosis-- He gladly gave them to me and talked to me for a long while on how I was doing. A few years ago my grandmother saw Dr. Shapiro for a spinal problem-- Dr. Shapiro remembered who I was and told my grandmother that he would enjoy me stopping by the office if ever in town. Dr. Shapiro made a horrible experience a bearable one, and for that, he will forever be in my heart.

I disliked that he decided to tell me he thought I had metastasized breast cancer in my neck without even knowing. Luckily I did not have that at all, and instead degenerative disc disease. I was all alone when he told me. No family members, husband nor friend accompanying me that day.

Dr. David Shapiro gave me back my life. After I had back surgery which included metal plates and screws with cages, I can now do everything I was unable to do for a long while. I was confident and very happy with Dr. Shapiro. HE is my hero! I could never say anything but, thank you to an unbelivable wonderful man who saved my life. He's a kind understanding dr with a heart of gold who cares about his patients.

My first off the bat experience was good maybe because I needed to relief my back and sciatic pain and he offered to do so with a spinal fusion which at first seemed to work OK. In my subsequent visits, he seemed to be quite indifferent but thanks to his wonderful nurse Judy who kept encouraging me, I kept going without knowing that the surgery was a total disaster. I am so furious at him and at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute that I am considering a law suite. Now I am suffering even more than before, the pain in my lower back has come back with a vengeance going down to my left foot. I saw several doctors from Illinois Bone about the foot and all of them were so off about the whole diagnosis, it's not even funny for people that consider themselves experts, Illinois Bone & Joint has disappointed me to no end and the pain and suffering that I am in now has no price; most likely I am going to have to do another surgery but certainly not by any doctor from Illinois Bone & Joint. It seem… to me this organizations is all out for the money because their professionals are far form it.. Awful! Awful!! experience; would not recommend any of those doctors to anyone. They greet you nicely and treat you very well until they get the money, once the whole thing is done, they clean their hand and send you for other opinions like Dr, Karla Gamez did she is supposedly a Podiatrist but knows nothing of the sort. Bottom line, they are very incompetent.

My WC insurance carrier sent me to Doctor David Shapiro for an IME. I had been told by a fe sources that many of these IME doctors lean heavily towards telling the insurance companies what they want to hear. I was still determined to keep an open mind going into this visit.I had previously suffered an injury at work due to repetitive lifting that resulted in a bulging disc, back spasms and severe sciatica. The left side of my foot had been numb for almost a year and a half. My own orthopaedic doctor had issued an epidural injection in the past along with ongoing therapy. This was quite effective in providing relief. However, the back spasms eventually returned, combined with periodic shooting pain down my left leg. My own doctor issued another epidural and this is when the WC insurance carrier decided on an IME. with Dr. Shapiro. Unfortunately Dr. Shapiro lost credibility within 10 mins. of my visit. He never once even looked at the nurses notes but yet very quickly proceeded to tell… me that I quite possibly had arthritis. He said that my symptoms were probably not even related to the injury! Yes, my back spasms and shooting leg pain that were the exact symptoms I had around the time of injury was now arthritis? My own doctor had prescribed the drug lyrica along with a muscle relaxer. But Dr. Shapiro told me that despite Lyrica being an effective drug I could probably just use an over the counter medication to relieve my symptoms of..."Arthritis"!!!If this wasn't such a serious issue I would have laughed all the way home. These doctors should spend more time listening to their patients and observing their history of back problems instead of trying to please the WC insurance carriers that help line their pockets. I found this "independent" medical evaluation to be conducted very poorly and with little regard for my well being.

Dr. Shapiro has been my doctor and I feel now like he is a friend who really cares about my back problems. His nurse Judy, is awesome. Dr. Shapiro clearly explains things and patiently re-explains if I don't understand. His great sense of humor comes through if you spend a little time talking with him. I have found him to be highly responsive to my needs.

screwed up first disc fusion c6-7 so had to have another surgery at c4-5 and c5-6. No pain relief at all; instead more. Lost voice for 5 months and have not been able to swallow properly for 9 months. Consequently have lost over 25% of my body weight. Have to go to Nortwestern to see if they can fix eating and swallowing resultant problems. Have to take multiple pain meds to just get through day.

This doc. literally saved my life. I had a fractured C2 plus other injuries to my spine. He worked dilligently to stabilize my neck. After wearing a halo for 3 mos. and 3 surguries and his wonderful boss, I mean nurse Judy, I am not paralyzed. Dr. Shapiro and I could fight like cats & dogs, but he is and always will be, along with Judy, a part of my heart.
