Dr. David Wayne Stevens, MD

I had surgery given by Dr. David W. Steven's. The third week of my recuperating I was suddenly paralyzed from mid thigh down. My sons had to carry me to a car and we went to the emergency room.Iwas hospitalized for a week. I was asleep and my wife and son said he walked in with a look of discuss and shouted I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS !! He never offered any medical advice, never called and I never heard from him again.So I wound up with permanent cripple left ankle and foot and I have to wear a brace to walk ! I also ended up with lifetime surgical neuropathy causing horrible pain ! I'm now seeing a neurologist and the ct scan I took shows what he did is falling apart. This surgery is only 2 years old but this Dr. WILL fit it all .But I will still be lame and in pain the rest of my life !

Dr Stevens operated on my dad. The first time was for a drop foot. He claimed it was fixed but the foot not only was not fixed, he now had excruciating pain in his lower back. Dr Stevens told my dad he needed another surgery to repair his back. He had another surgeon do a front (abdominal) approach as he said this was the preferred route to reach what he needed to do. My dad came out of that surgery and was never able to walk again. Upon waking up from surgery his pain got worse and worse everyday. Dr Stevens never returned calls and did not come in to see my dad at the rehab. He was unable to do any of the rehab because he could not walk. He was in excruciating pain. Dr Stevens told him he needed to get up and walk but my dad could not move without screaming out in pain. After much family pressure to get an X-ray we found out that his sacrum was fractured. One of the screws he had put in my dads sacrum was also not inside the sacrum but resting just outside the sacrum. Dr Stevens… said this was my dads fault because he was too fat. Yes, he is over weight but not when he wakes up to find he couldn’t do anything right out of surgery. If that was an issue, a good dr would have advised such a thing and also not screwed 5 screws directly into a sacrum if this was a huge risk. Needless to say, he tried to follow up with Stevens and he told him (when he would return a call...rare) that he could not help him and he would have to stay in bed, not moving for 6 months for the sacrum to heal. Drop foot is still there and now he can’t get out of bed. Find a better spine surgeon. Read reviews. They are accurate when people take the time to write about a botched surgery from an incompetent, surgeon.

Dr. Stevens was in tune with my issues and provided good description of my issues.

This is my first and only review. I am an actual patient of Dr. Stevens. Unlike many other anonymous reviews given here, I will give my name: Ross Larsen of Bountiful. Dr. Stevens has been my doctor for over two years. Like many here I have really struggled with back pain for over 10 years. Two years ago my condition worsened significantly. Dr. Stevens recommended a conservative approach. Early on I asked if I was a candidate for surgery. He calmly said, "lets look at all options and treatments and YOU will tell me when and if it is time." Such wise advise. I worked with Dr. Weston in his joint practice at Mountain Pain and Spine and got great relief, but the time did come, and Dr. Stevens was right, I did know it was time and asked for a surgical option. I am now 10 weeks post surgery (fusion) and Dr. Stevens was there every step of the way. He calmed my fears prior to surgery and supported me post surgery. If I needed meds, I got them. There was a reasonable and… responsible approach to pain management. I can say it has been so great to work with a surgeon who will take the time to explain all options and NEVER make you feel rushed in a consultation. I have had a GREAT experience with Mountain Pain and Spine and doctors Weston and Stevens. I am still a patient of Dr. Stevens and recommend him highly!

So so disappointing! Dr Stevens should be ashamed of the PA he's hired. My wife went to get help with back pain she has been having to see if they could offer help by doing doing something other than medication (ie injections, therapy, etc) and his PA proceeded to go on a 10 minute rant about the opioid epidemic and how my wife shouldn't be on any pain medicine. We didn't want medication nor did we bring it up. It was very uncomfortable and unnecessary. My wife came in to get help (not medication) and ended up with an over the top lecture. He completely undermined the physician that referred us to him (and we will be letting them know). This PAs demeanor and character were reprehensible and would caution anyone not to go to practice or Dr Stevens. If you're looking for a caring practice you should look into Utah Spine Care and see Karen Anderson and Dr Houden, they would never treat a patient like this. Shame on this practice and shame on Dr Stevens for allowing this behavior.

My daughter went in to see Dr Stevens today because she was interested to see if injections would help her back pain. Instead of Dr Stevens, she saw a Joshua Stam. The discussion went well until the end of the session where Stam asked her if she was taking any pain medication. From that point on he preceded to not just counsel her on the evils of pain medication but he talked down to her, belittled her and made her feel worthless. My daughter came home crying (thanks for the compassion) which has upset three additional families. Stam obviously saw that he had a captive audience and vigorously touted the party line not concerned in the least for the feelings of my daughter. My daughter would love not to have to take any medication which was obviously the reason she went to see Dr Stevens in the first place. STAM you need to develop some people skills before you are let lose to unload on future unsuspecting victims .

I read the negative review's, but didn't experience what they did. I saw him through a referral. He listened to my problem, examined me, and I really felt he wanted to help me. I was impressed that he reviewed the notes and scan prior to my visit. He is confident, but that's a good thing. His office got me in quickly and were able to schedule my surgery very fast.

Met with Dr. Stevens for severe back pain and to review MRI for disc issues. Patiently explained what is going on with my back and the pain caused by nerve issues. Discussed course of treatment and that I did not need surgery at this point. He and his staff got me in right away with another doctor for cortison epidural.

If you are looking for someone to hold your hand or cry with you, he is not your doctor. If you are looking for someone to do a good job and take the time to explain all options, he is great. I had a lumbar decompression surgery and everything worked well except I developed a hematoma which is not his fault. He went back in and cleaned it up and things are starting to improve. I would recommend Dr. Stevens

He is literally the worst. I understand surgeons that are arrogant and confident. He exudes nothing more than cockiness and cavalier behaviors. I wouldn't recommend him to walk my dog let alone do surgery.
