Dr. Derek F. Amanatullah, MD, PhD

Dr. Amanatullah performed an excellent hip replacement for me - my recovery was as rapid as could be hoped, and my return to normal activity was much faster than expected. Dr. Amanatullah is an incredibly skilled surgeon, and equally professional, caring and transparent.

I felt I was not listened to or taken seriously or given credit for knowledge about my own body and 32 years of medical background. Exam was minimal, insufficient to evaluate adequately my hip function. There is more to hip joint function than bone and cartilage! I would have liked to have heard questions regarding lifestyle and daily activities too.

I had hip replacement surgery in my home town 2015. It left me with one leg around an inch shorter than the other and special shoes and pain in my hip and back…I was miserable. I was unable to do many of the things that I loved – walking any distance being one of them. When my other hip began giving me trouble, we decided to go to Stanford which is about a three-hour drive from my home. We had heard many good things about the care there. When Dr. Amanatullah entered the treatment room – we so surprised. Here was a doctor that was extremely pleasant and down to earth and easy to talk to. He discussed what had gone on with my care, and we discussed what to do next. He gave us all the time we needed to voice our concerns. He did not go right to surgery, but tried another less invasive treatment first. After the treatment, we saw him in the hall of the facility as we were leaving. He called us over and asked how I was feeling after the treatment – on his own time – with a kind… smile on his face! When the time came for surgery, he was amazing. Even though the difference in leg lengths was quite a bit, he said he would try to make me more comfortable. Today, I cannot tell that there is a difference in the leg lengths. The hip he replaced has NO PAIN and works perfectly. I have my life back again. I can walk and we even just joined a gym and the only problem I am having is my age (!) and some pain still from the first surgery on my left hip. (which Dr. Amantullah is addressing) He gave me back all the things I was missing. I will always be grateful to Dr. Amantullah for his care and attention and skill. I can never thank him enough.

I recently had a total hip replacement performed by Dr. Derek F. Amanatullah. When I was first informed that I needed hip replacement, I was very anxious, scared, and depressed about it. I never had surgery so major, so I delayed it for about a year. Boy, was that a mistake! If I had known how it would go, or what Dr. Amanatullah could do for me, I would have done it a lot sooner and not endured the pain and limping for all that time. Days before surgery, Dr. Amanatullah calmed my fears with his caring attitude, knowledge, and answers to all my questions. On the day of the surgery, as I was wheeled in and being prepped, he came and talked to me, and I knew I was ready, confident about the procedure, and that I was in good hands. The surgery went very well, and all the anxieties I had about it was truly unfounded, and seems even silly. In the end, it felt fairly routine, thanks to the good doctor. I was amazed that I was able to walk almost right away after surgery! The… excellent hospital staff and facilities at Stanford completed a very satisfying hospital experience. My recovery went really well immediately after surgery, and several months after, according to schedule. I returned to my normal activities sooner than I expected. I used to take walking for granted, until I couldn't. Now that I can walk again, I am very grateful. I feel very fortunate to have Dr. Amanatullah as my surgeon, and would whole-heartedly recommend him to any of my family and friends!

After seeing other orthopedic surgeons for my crippling knee arthritis, I saw Dr. Amanatullah with low expectations. Meeting him was serendipitous--I called and said "I'm in so much pain, I'll see whomever is available." Little did I know how fortunate I was to have called right after a cancellation. Dr. A changed my life. Previous injections had been extremely painful. He did two things that turned out to be miraculous: 1. He applied anesthetic with one hand while injecting into a previously-uninjected part of the knee with the other, resulting in a painless treatment, and 2. He gave me a picture of a clock indicating times for alternating oral medications, which I followed to the letter. I also began a regular program of lap swimming which he said would supplement the treatment. I see him every three months, and he continues to keep me pain free. He works quickly and doesn't chat. That's fine with me. I have better things to do than hang out in a doctor's… office. I wasn't there to make a friend; I was there for pain relief. I'm almost 80, and I climbed all 37 stories of the Eiffel Tower with my grandson this summer. And the Arc d'Triomphe. And the Roman Theatre in L'Orange. I love Dr. Amanatullah.

Dr Amanatullah replaced my knee which had been replaced three years prior by another physician. I was in pain for three years and the other physician said there was nothing wrong with it. Dr Amanatullah checked it out and was able to determine it was installed incorrectly. Since Dr Amanatullah replaced my knee, now 6 months ago I have almost no pain. He is the best! I will be forever grateful. Faith Ecker
