Dr. Derek Hidehiko Ochiai, MD

I had three PRP injections from Dr. Ochiai for advanced hip osteoarthritis (two in the right hip and one in the left). Until recently, I generally regarded him as technically knowledgeable and capable. However, my most recent follow-up appointment was an extremely disappointing experience. My appointment was scheduled for 10:45 a.m. I waited in the waiting room until approximately 11:25 with no explanation for the delay. I was then taken to an exam room, instructed to change into disposable shorts, and left there alone for approximately another 30 minutes, again with no communication or update from anyone in the office. At that point, I left without seeing Dr. Ochiai because I felt the complete lack of communication and respect for my time was unacceptable. What further disappointed me was the follow-up voicemail I later received from Dr. Ochiai. The message characterized the situation as though I had simply “had to leave,” rather than acknowledging that I left because of how… poorly the appointment had been handled. There was no meaningful acknowledgment of the problem, no apology for the experience itself, and no concrete proposal to remedy the situation. The entire purpose of the appointment was to discuss the results of my latest PRP injection and next treatment steps before an upcoming extended trip abroad. Instead, the appointment effectively never occurred. Technical skill is important, but professionalism, communication, and basic respect for patients’ time are important as well. Unfortunately, this experience significantly damaged my confidence in the practice.

I have been a patient for a number of years. Dr. Ochiai took the time and expertise to try many ways to improve my hip problem before finally we decided to do arthroscopic surgery to repair my gluteus medius tendon. It was the right decision and he is a compassionate and caring physician. Thank you, Dr. Ochiai!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Ochiai for several years for an arthritic hip. He’s a wonderful doctor, a good listener, well-informed, and that rare type of surgeon who helps his patients consider all non-surgical options until and unless surgery is absolutely necessary.

I’ve been referred to Dr. Ochiai by the VA after 10 years of struggling with bilateral hip pain due to military injuries. Dr. Ochiai and his team were extremely professional and helpful with the entire process pre and post arthroscopy surgery. Dr. Ochiai’s expertise and surgical finesse were instrumental in the success of the surgery. I was up and walking without brace or crutches and with no pain in several days. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Ochiai.
