I am nothing but exemplary marks for Dr. Boone and her practice. I’ve encountered communication problems with some doctors. Phone calls aren’t returned, promises are not kept and that can sour any otherwise good experience. From the moment I made first contact with Dr. Boone and her office, I have had a great experience. They return calls and emails. Everything went as expected so there were no surprises. I changed my insurance in order to have Dr. Boone do my surgery as I belonged to HMO, not a PPO. Despite the insurer telling me they approve out-of-network surgeries all the time and not to worry (their exact words), I was unable to get them to approve this surgery with this surgeon. I appealed three times and I was denied each time. I went with my Plan B and changed insurers. One month later, Dr. Boone operated on me. You want an experienced surgeon with parathyroid disease. One of the governing rules of a successful parathyroid surgery is that the surgeon looks for and finds all… four glands. Imaging is unreliable and while it may prove useful, it did not in my case help the surgeon. It indicated a diseased parathyroid where the wasn’t one and did not find the actual adenoma. I’m glad I went with Dr. Boone who has done thousands of parathyroid surgeries and is arguably one of very best anywhere. She told me mine was “a very difficult surgery.” Instead of a 30 minute operation, it took about two hours. Parathyroids are tricky glands because they may not be where you expect and there can even be more than four of them. A heart surgeon has a pretty good idea where your heart is but a parathyroid surgeon may know approximately where your glands are but you need someone who has experience and has seen everything! That means the more surgeries they’ve done, the higher likelihood you’ll have a successful surgery. As for the result? I’m very satisfied! My calcium numbers and parathyroid numbers are back to normal. My energy levels returned and I’m back to thoroughly enjoying life. I do have to validate Dr. Boone’s office as well. They operate very professionally and take the worry out of the process.

I was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism, high Calcium and Parathyroid hormone (PTH), normal Vitamin D. My primary care provider told me the only cure was surgery to remove the diseased parathyroid gland (s) that were creating the imbalance. I immediately started an intense internet search for the very best parathyroid surgeons who only specialized in this area of medicine. I wanted someone who performed many of these surgeries on a very regular basis. After careful review I chose to consult with Dr. Deva Boone. What impressed me the most was that she performed the most comprehensive surgery, visually inspecting all four parathyroid glands, doing so with a minimally invasive short procedure. I learned that pre op scans do not always show all of the diseased glands, making it especially crucial to have them visually inspected. I immediately felt at ease with Dr. Boone upon meeting her. She patiently answered my questions and provided details that were pertinent to my case. Her… entire practice is focused exclusively to parathyroid conditions. I scheduled my scan and surgery at her preferred out patient surgi center. On the day of my surgery I was most impressed with her expert compassionate team that made me feel safe, secure, comfortable and calm. The surgery itself was approximately 30 minutes, and I was in post op for two hours talking to my nurse that never left me. Afterward I was released after talking with Dr. Boone about post op instructions and my personalized Calcium supplement dosages. She called later that evening to see how I was doing. The next day I did a modified workout and resumed normal activities. I never needed pain meds, and two months later my one inch scar is barely noticeable. To say I had a remarkable result is an understatement, but a true testimonial to Dr. Boone’s surgical skills and personalized expertise. All my numbers are now in the normal range. My sincere hope is that my experience encourages others with parathyroid conditions to seek the very best expert in this niche area of medical practice. I am confident that Dr. Boone will emerge as the clear cut leader in her field. She will provide each patient with exceptional, compassionate expert care. One of the best Parathyroid Surgeons in the country. I can only describe my parathyroid surgery experience with Dr. Deva Boone as the most "positive medical experience" of my life. I don't think any other doctor/facility has ever heard that before. I feel that she literally saved my life. I am so grateful to Dr. Boone and her amazing and professional staff. I felt extremely safe with the anesthesiologist as well. No other doctor would "operate" on me because I was "high risk" for stroke. Ha! Dr. Boone & Staff showed them! I had what was described as an unusual case as my symptoms and lab results were not in line with a typical case of primary hyperparathyroidism. From the moment that I contacted her office staff and then had my online consultation, I felt totally at peace with my choice of Dr. Boone as my surgeon. Dr. Boone is the most thorough, thoughtful doctor I’ve ever consulted with. She is an unparalleled expert, and her detailed review of my records was unlike any consultation I’ve ever had. She’s empathetic, caring, makes your wishes a priority, and has unmatched experience. She also took time to answer my Aunt’s questions regarding my second surgery. I had a prior parathyroidectomy performed by a different surgeon, that helped, but didn’t cure me because one adenoma was left behind. I am hoping she will be able to perform my second surgery, yet due to insurance issues I may not be eligible for her care. Yet, I strongly recommend anyone planning a surgery go to her first, or at minimum, at least pay out of pocket to consult with her. She’s worth it! I spent hours studying parathyroid surgery before having Dr. Boone do mine. The local doctors in the Pittsburgh, PA area were not impressive even though my endocrinologist recommended them. I contacted other doctors around the country as well. I really understood hyperparathyroidism well and could handle an intelligent conversation with the doctors. Dr. Boone was excellent in all ways. I would highly recommend her without reservation. She checks all four parathyroid glands. The doesn't do a focused surgery like everyone else. This can be a problem when removal of one bad parathyroid gland doesn't bring down the intra-operative PTH. Then the search for the other bad gland starts and potential problems can occur like a long exploratory surgery or a good gland being removed. Have it done once and done right.
