If I had stayed in Dr Tzachnis’ care at UCSD, I would likely have died. After a tough induction for AML, I was not in remission. I was told by Dr. Tzachnis that I could not handle more chemo. I transferred to City of Hope where they were confident I could handle it. They were right. During this chemo treatment that got me into remission, I walked 10000 steps a day in the hospital hallways and ate 3 healthy meals a day. I was then MRD negative with no trace of my aml mutations. A successful sct followed. Outcomes matter. City of Hope has better AML outcomes AND they take on higher risk patients. I was not considered a higher risk patient to COH. I am thrilled by reviews where patients had success with UCSD and Dr Tzachanis. Had I stayed under the ‘care’ of Dr Tzachnis, I would probably not be alive to tell you my experience. No reviews are written by patients who died. Do your homework. Have advocates. Get second opinions.

You couldn’t ask for a better doctor. He truly cares and takes the time to explain all of your options in terms a non-medical person can understand. I chose to stay in San Diego rather than than go home to Missouri for my treatments to keep him as my doctor.

Dr. T is one of the most intelligent, caring, kind doctor my family has ever met. When my mother was diagnosed with Lymphoma at age 79 her PCP told us to bring her home and call hospice. Instead, we brought her to BIDMC and under the care of Dr. T she has been completely cancer free for 2 years. I have never met a doctor like him.

I am a patient of Dr. Tzachanis for one year after being diagnosed with MDS and having a bone marrow transplant at the BI in 2010. He is a very thorough examiner and the team of physicians and staff work extremely well together. The coverage if your doctor is unavailable is very reassuring and the team meets on a weekly basis to go over each patient's case. I have been treating weekly with Dr. T. Each week is a new question with new answers. I would highly recommend him.
