Dr. Domenic Paul Esposito, MD

i suffered a massive head trauma in 2001. Dr Esposito showed such emotion for my situation especially seeing my four children. He was honest and straightforward in giving me the prognosis The three possibilities according to my injuries did not include recovery. The team felt surgery was necessary but Dr Esposito had misgivings. So strong, in fact, that at the time of surgery he went missing. I was prepped, the operating staff in place and he had checked in but was a no show. Twice more the team scheduled surgery and he talked them into delaying. Finally it could wait no longer. One last chance he said. If we take out the stint and you can sit up- no surgery. Up to this point I had been unable to lift my head but I not only lifted my head, I sat up and then walked. It's kind of strange, I guess, to praise a brain surgeon for NOT performing surgery. He was very concerned at my release because he was headed to Italy. He accurately predicted what problems would send me back to the… hospital and what the non-neuro doctors would want to prescribe and that I MUST NOT take Even after I instructed them that I could not take those meds they were given to me anyway. I refused them unless they cleared it with Dr E. I was assured he concurred. "You actually called him in Italy?" Stammering and blushingly admitted he had not. Next day this other doctor came and deeply apologized for not paying attention to what I repeatedly told him about Dr E instructions and why. He checked and if I had not stood behind Dr E's warnings I could have suffered severe consequences For a year I had periodic check ups and Dr E was great. I asked him why he chose not to operate. He said according to my injury I shouldn't have had mental capacity, or able to talk or have muscle control but I did If he did surgery I would lose one or more of those abilities. He did not want to be the one who took it from me. I thank Dr e for recognizing and giving rein to his gut instinct
