My husband developed sepsis in mid July, 2025 and was admitted directly from the ER to the hospital at Maine Med. After a full week of strong antibiotics to control what was diagnosed as a massive blood infection, he was operated on in an 8 hour procedure to remove his Infected aorta from just below his kidneys, to just above the veins running down his legs, and replace it with a vein from his thigh. The procedure was extremely high risk and the surgical team was absolutely extraordinary. Dr. McGuirl (aka Dr Don :-) was with us every single step of the way, from pre-surgery, throughout the surgical process, visited his room in the ICU daily, and stayed with him until his release to New England Rehab Hospital a week later. His bedside manner is off the charts; his care and attention to detail, calm and positive demeanor, and his willingness to meet and talk with us at all times of the day and night, was an immense relief to our two kids, both of whom live in Colorado and to me. We'll… never be able to thank him enough! We couldn't have dreamed of a better team, and my husband is stronger and happier every day.:-)
