Dr. Douglas Wayne Johnson, MD

Dr. Douglas Johnson of Honolulu is probably the finest Dr. with whom I have ever worked. His analyses of my many, varied dermatological and other medical problems have always been spot on, decisive, and 100% accurate. His recommended treatments have always been completely successful. When I have sought hos help in finding other doctors for non-dermatological conditions, his recommendations have always provided me with the finest of doctors and treatments.

Excellent, personable physician with good ability to sense when skin cancer is present or not present, thus avoiding unnecessary biopsies. Seek his assessment before he retires.

This doctor has a problem of quality. He thought his patient who needs an interpreter did not know English so he said something like "..dont translate this part to him because i know he will negate what i told him...". The doctor kept saying the patient has bad habit using index finger nails to damage the nail of his thumb. The patient declined. He said he never had such habit and the nail like that for 8 years. The doctor couldn't figure out the problem. He said the guys only denied never accept then he told the interpreter not to translate that part when he said something about the guy. The interpreter said she had to translate exactly what she heard from either the patient or the doctor. Then the doctor told the interpreter not come back any more. He said the interpreter had to translate whatever he told to translate! What a ridiculous!! The doctor couldn't figure out the patient's medical problem then tried to hide by language difference! SHAME ON HIM!

I do not recommend Dr. (Douglas) Johnson. This was my first time seeing a dermatologist which made me feeling pretty nervous. My first interaction with the office staff was ok, but they didn't go out of the way to make me feel welcomed as a new patient. I had many questions as most new patients would have and was told to save my questions for Dr. Johnson. I waited thirty minutes to be seen and when he came in with his nurse they weren't approachable which made feel even more nervous. Because I didn't know what to expect I sat quietly and listened to Dr. Johnson tell his nurse a bunch of medical terminology that didn't make any sense. After he was finished he asked me a few questions about what I would like to do. Well... my response was like most and said "to be acne free" an awkward moment took place as if I said something wrong, so then I decided to ask him what the terms meant that he was telling the nurse and if he could explain to me my case. He very briefly threw more… medical terminology my way which again didn't make any sense to someone who wasn't in the medical field. I asked him to help me understand what it meant and he acted turned off by my questions and pressed for time. At this point I didn't know what else to ask so I sat through the remaining of the appointment answering his questions and left the room feeling discouraged. I went to the front desk and was given a prescription for a wash that later did nothing. Overall, I do not recommend Dr. (Douglas) Johnson as a dermatologist as hes not very caring or considerate toward his patients feelings.

For the first time I made the mistake of reading reviews others had on a doctor I'll be seeing. I had only intended on making sure I had the right building through Google Maps, but there it was. An overall rating of 2.4, with more than a few negative comments. I made myself nervous before the appointment, scared to see a mean doctor again -- I went through a couple of years of being treated as a hypochondriac/crazy with doctors at Tripler Army Medical Center, eventually referred to specialists at Queens, and *bam* found out I have multiple autoimmune diseases. Recently developed what I thought was a rash (red spots, no itching/irritation) -- primary doctor & rheumatologist referred me to the next available dermatologist which happened to be Dr. Johnson. Within a week they miraculously had an appointment scheduled for me. I walked in the office (which, by the way, not only has seats but also a television -- in response to a previous review), was greeted by a friendly staff, filled out… the short 'new patient' form, and within 5 minutes the nurse called me in (by the posts on here I assumed I'd be waiting at least half an hour!) takes me straight to the exam room, did my stats and a few minutes later, there's Dr. Johnson!My heart was racing because I was so nervous to meet this mean man. I could barely make eye contact (actually my BP & HR were both wayyy up and I'm normally a calm person). But I looked up and he had a very kind smile and extended his hand, introduced himself..etc. Asked me some questions, had me change into a gown (obviously in private), came back in, inspected the "rash" on my feet & legs (and not with haste, very thorough and with great care), discussed his main hypothesis with me so that I understood. I had many questions for him regarding the condition (vasculitis) in conjunction with my other autoimmune diseases and medications. He answered every question without irritation, and with a concerned and friendly attitude. He explained the diagnosis, the disease process, the prognosis, other future diagnostics and possible treatments, the whole shebang. I left the office that day feeling very relieved and grateful. I do feel for those who have had a bad experience with him, but perhaps he's only human and has had some tough times of his own. It is clear to me that he may not have the brightest personality in the world, but he definitely cares; it's entirely genuine. Also, let's be honest, specialists are few and far between in Hawaii. They have to do their best to fit everyone in, and most of the time you'll have to wait. Occasionally you'll get lucky, like I did.If not, I definitely believe he is worth that wait.

I've been seeing Doug Johnson for years and realize, as many have indicated that there can be waits at his office. The obvious reason is that he is in demand and see patients with nearly any insurance coverage. As a result, I typically have to wait at least twenty minutes or more once I reach the office. With that being said, Dr. Johnson is an extremely caring and professional doctor, highly regarded by his colleagues and I would recommend him to anyone.

I have several doctors i see for various medical issues and am completely open to the idea of waiting, or not getting enough time or attention from busy MDs these days. I believe if you're proactive, intelligent and aggressive about your own health, most docs will provide sufficient care. This "gentleman" however, takes the cake as the most insincere, unfortunate, belittling MD that i've had the misfortune of encountering in Hawaii. If you have a choice, he should not be your choice. I understand that busy docs cannot (and do not need to) always be hand-holding messiahs, but this guy takes the off-hand, "holier-than-thou" attitude to new heights. I am thoroughly disgusted. I feel for the office staff as the NP and the rest of the staff have impressed me as total professionals.

We arrived at 1045 for an 1100 appointment to have the doctor evaluate a cyst on my 4 yo. We waited together in a standing room only waiting room (lots of fun with a small child) until 1202 before we were finally taken to an exam room (despite the receptionist's repeated claim that we were next and watching two other patients go into the back - not to mention that the doctor came into the waiting room during that time and greeted a drug rep before escorting her behind closed doors for a good ten minutes.) We then waited another 16 minutes to actually see the doctor. Total wait time - 1 hr 18 minutes to see the doctor for four whole minutes. As soon as his RN told him that my son was covered by QUEST insurance he couldn't shuffle us out of his office fast enough. Oh, he did give us a referral to someone else who might exise the cyst. We weren't the only ones frustrated. Another mother said she had been there two hours before she finally decided she'd had enough and left. … Ordinarily I might consider that a doctor has things come up in his day and may on occassion run a bit late, but this was excessive and it wasn't the first time. I had been to this doctor myself once a few years ago and had a similar experience then.
