Dr. Jennifer Low Amerson, MD

If you were a patient of Dr. Amerson on or before 2022, your HIPAA rights may have been violated—mine were. I experienced a significant delay in care when an imaging order related to a potentially rare and serious diagnosis had still not been submitted two weeks after Dr. Amerson wrote it. When I followed up, Dr. Amerson’s nurse stated she was not sure how to process the order. I contacted the imaging facility myself, obtained the appropriate fax number and instructions, and provided that information to Dr. Amerson’s nurse. During a subsequent follow-up call, Dr. Amerson’s nurse told me the fax would not go through. However, Dr. Amerson’s nurse made no effort to contact the imaging facility to troubleshoot the issue or ensure the order was properly submitted. During a time-sensitive medical situation, the nurse demonstrated a troubling lack of competence, urgency, and care coordination. The situation escalated when I requested my medical records via email because I ultimately decided… I needed to deliver the imaging order myself so I could get the appointment scheduled without further delay. The nurse refused the request, stating BCS could not send records electronically because the practice did not use a secure messaging system and doing so would “violate HIPAA.” That statement was incorrect, which I calmly attempted to explain. Most patients do not realize they have a federally protected right to receive their medical records in the form they request, including unencrypted email. Despite explaining this— and even citing the law, which is part of my profession — I was dismissed, repeatedly told I was wrong, and the nurse ultimately hung up on me. Instead of addressing the issue or confirming whether my statements were accurate, the nurse complained to Dr. Amerson, who subsequently contacted my PCP to report that I had “upset” the nurse. Ironically, my request for the medical records was only because I was attempting to prevent further delays in my care by delivering the imaging order myself. Yet by refusing my request, Dr. Amerson created another barrier to care and violated my federally protected right to access my medical records. I filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR). OCR reviewed the matter and confirmed that the denial of access to my medical records under HIPAA required corrective action. While OCR resolved the matter through technical assistance rather than penalties — because I was told no other complaints had been filed against BCS regarding this issue — the outcome still confirms the concern was legitimate: BCS subsequently implemented an encrypted email system. This was not just a legal issue — it directly impacted my care and added significant emotional distress during an already difficult and frightening medical situation. Patients should not have to fight to have their legally protected rights honored. I hope this review encourages others to ask questions, understand their rights, and expect better from healthcare providers. BTW-I never received that order.

So glad to have her as my breast surgeon. She removed all the cancer and even called me after the biopsy to let me know what I had.

Terrible attitude! After being scheduled for surgery her attitude went from fair to extremely poor. I will not use her ever again. Will be searching other avenues for a great surgeon. Atlanta is a big city with a lot more to offer in surgeons than she has to offer. Very poor bedside manners.

Dr. Amerson is a top notch skilled surgeon with great gentle, patient, comforting bedside manner. Follow up however was not satisfactory. After my surgery, I received very little info on what to expect or support. I inadvertently missed 2 follow up mamograms (chemo brain?) and never heard a word from her office. No outreach, no reminders calls or emails. Trying to sign up for patient portal was a nightmare and never succeeded. A letter with questions to the doctor ( forget talking by phone) went unanswered. Saw the NP instead of the Dr on follow up visits though I requested a doctor--even if Dr. Amerson was unavailable. Misinformation from nurse led to having to make an additional appt.& trip to the office for an MRI though I had asked about it when I set up the appt. for the mamogram. No one available to set up MRI appt. Someone supposed to call me back to do so and never heard back. Changing doctors as a result of this unsatisfactory follow up care. And parking is $6 which I think is… outrageous.

Wow, Jennifer Amerson is the nicest person I know for a doctor and I am in the business with physicians in the Atlanta area! Dr. Amerson took the time to check me over talk to me comfort me as well as hug me when I had happy tears of relief rolling down! I had been in such fear waiting for the week out for my appointment to get my sonogram and momogram from a lump found, turns out it was scar tissue from the lift and implants 9 yrs ago. WHEW! I have to follow up in 4 months, I would never trust anyone else after the GREAT experience with the whole staff! Amazing place! Everyone Cares! And it shows!

I met Dr. Amerson during the most challenging time in my life. She help me get through my breast cancer. She performed the best surgery I could have asked for. Her staff was very professional and caring. I would recommend her because of her professionalism, compassion and most of all her skills as a great doctor.

Dr. Amerson took the time to show me my films and explain the risks of the mass so that I could understand my decision for surgery. She put me at ease regarding the surgery and it went very smoothly with clear borders. Thank you!
