Dr. Jian Shen, MD

I'm lucky to have Dr. Shen to be my surgeon! On July 18, 2025, I underwent spine surgery performed by Dr. Jian Shen and his surgical teammate, Dr. Travis Hill. My pre-op diagnosis included severe lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication, lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis, and lumbar radiculopathy. My condition before surgery had severely impacted my mobility and daily life. Just weeks prior, in June 2025, I attended an academic conference in Boston and was completely unable to walk, having to rely on a wheelchair to get around. The surgical procedure was complex and extensive, including L3/4, L4/5, and L5/S1 endplate osteotomies, partial L5 corpectomy for resection of significant endplate osteophytes, L3/4 and L4/5 bilateral laminotomies, bilateral L4/5 and L5/S1 posterolateral foraminotomies using an outside-in approach, and L3/4, L4/5, and L5/S1 posterior facet augmentation/arthrodesis with local bone autograft without instrumentation. Thanks to Dr. Shen’s… extraordinary surgical expertise, the operation was a complete success, and my recovery has been truly life-changing. In the very first week post-surgery, I experienced dramatic relief—my right leg felt about 80 to 85 percent recovered, and my left leg about 70 to 75 percent recovered. Now, one year later, my right leg is almost 100 percent recovered, and my left leg is at about 85 percent. I can comfortably walk for over an hour and a half without pain. Less than a year after surgery, between May and July 2026, I was able to travel across China for nearly two months. I navigated airport terminals, transferred between flights, and walked through multiple touring cities with total ease—something that would have been unimaginable before the operation. Beyond his brilliant clinical skills, Dr. Shen is an exceptionally warm, patient, and compassionate doctor. During our appointments both before and after surgery, he always took the time to listen carefully, never making me as well as my wife feel rushed, and answered every single question from both my wife and me with immense patience. What stands out just as much is Dr. Shen’s genuine thoughtfulness toward his patients' families. During my procedure at St. Mary's Healthcare, which lasted from morning until afternoon, he kept in mind that my wife was waiting outside the operating room. He thoughtfully arranged for a hospital meal voucher so she could get something to eat for lunch while waiting. Additionally, the office staff at ShenSpine are wonderful—always professional, kind, and quick to take care of any requests. Dr. Shen gave me my mobility and quality of life back. Within 3 weeks of my initial contact with Dr. Jian Shen, I was in minimal evasive spine surgery on Sept. 16, 2022 at St. Mary's as an outpatient basis in Amsterdam. After a couple of hours he miraculously removed a large 2 cm fragmented piece wrapped around the nerve posterior of my L4-5 degenerative disc and corrected spinal stenosis. My procedure required a second 2 set of navigational tools. After recovery the surgical nurse shared she made a joke, that I had the vertebrae that keeps on giving! No need to read any more reviews, he's done 5K procedures, and is ranked as the best out of 100 other doctors. I was so impressed from our Zoom call & his staff, I traveled from FLL to Albany via a wheelchair on drugs to mask excruciating pain. I suffered for 7 weeks with neuropathy pain crawling from recliner to the bathroom, to bed lying in a fetal position. I'm now walking unassisted! Don't suffer needlessly, call now! Dr.Juan Shen is a brilliant and unique surgeon ! I just had C5-C7 foraminal endoscopic surgery and starting a new life after so many years of struggling with foraminal stenosis. Dr.Shen one of very few surgeons in the country who perform this innovative cervical endoscopic surgery. Dr. Shen is extremely caring, compassionate and competent. He has a great personality and takes all the time needed to explain and support.

Greatest thing that happened to me in years! Practically crawled in ... being in the worse pain of my life!!! WALKED out PAIN FREE. First time without pain in years !!! He is a miracle worker !!!!

I have been very impressed with the care and concerns from Dr. Shen. He called me 4 days after my surgery on a Sunday evening. Ask how I was doing . That is going above and beyond for taking his own personal time to check in,. I had some other questions and called the after surgery contact person and was treated like I was the only patient they had. Thank You Dr Shen and staff .

My first visit went better than I could have hoped . Dr listened, Dr understood and Dr Shen gave me the first real hope since 1992 of being Pain free. I will give another rating after the surgery just wanted to express my satisfaction with a dr who cares enough to show me my problems on xray and mri, explain them and treatment my issues.

I had a spinal fusion 5 yrs ago done by Dr shen. After my first follow up with him I was a nobody and just was pushed off to the np even though was having problems after surgery. Now I find out 2 screws broke in my back and caused severe pain and had me in the hospital twice already due to the pain. I call to tell them what happened and once again pushed off onto the np not the dr.
